Does anybody know how hard it is to change majors?
Has anyone even heard of anyone changing majors at the UC's?

Can't speak for UCs but maybe someone else here can?
Generally speaking from what I know/seen/heard (correct me if any of this is false), it really depends. The sooner you change it, the better off you will be. Also the type of change is important too. Going from computer science to computer engineering probably won't affect you much, especially if you're still a fr/soph. Going to something like... creative writing though might be tough as you'd basically have to start over.

sure...i changed my major (i go to UCSD)...my friends changed theirs...my other friends at other schools changed theirs...people change their majors all the time...
the big thing you have to worry about is how drastic your major change is. if you want to switch from science to non-science, then you should consider doing that earlier on. that way you don't have to start over. if it's a change that has overlapping courses, then that's easier.
most schools only require you to HAVE to a major by the end of your second year, but you are still allowed to change major (as long as you have one, and not "undecided").
with that said, there are rules for changing majors. you should always double check with the department advising office. some schools have "compacted majors"...which means you HAVE TO be accepted into the major BEFORE your first year...otherwise, you _cannot_ switch into these compacted majors. at UCSD, pre-med bioengineering is compacted & so are some other majors...
also, some schools have "pre-majors"...which means you have to finish certain courses w/ certain GPA in order to be accepted formally into a major.
sometimes, even if you DO have a major, some majors have GPA requirement...that means if you don't maintain a certain GPA, you may be kicked out of your major.
if you think there's a chance that you might change your major, make sure you find out all the details/info regarding major change at the school you want to attend. that way, you won't be worried about not having a major or not getting into the major that you want.
