Hm, so my mother was talking to me about my cousin who got accepted into med school in the States, and first year tuition is about $40,000-$50,000!! Gosh, that's crazy! I got accepted into York U, and first year's tuition is around $4000 =S Why is going to university in the States so much more expensive than in Canada? And why is it that they don't offer as much financial aid in the States?

Universities in Canada generally give out a lot of entrance scholarships, and there's OSAP which helps out too, but obviously you have to pay back =)

Someone please explain, because I know there's some elaborate meaning to this! HAHA

Alice asked the Cheshire Cat `Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?'
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.
"I don't much care where--" said Alice.
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go,' said the Cat.

Hmm I live in Canada too (I got accepted to York too! What did you apply for? biggrin.gif).. But yeah, I honestly don't know why it costs that much in the States, but all I know is that (imo at least..) the costs are worth it if it's like.. a really good school.

I know that schools like Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc offer "need-based" financial aid. It's basically like.. If you need it, they'll give it to you. If your parents make less than $60,000, you pretty much get a free ride.. Sweet deal eh.

But if you want financial aid here in Ontario, your parents' income has to be pretty low in order to qualify for OSAP. My friends mom makes like.. $50 000 I think, which is pretty decent I guess, but he didnt qualify for any sort of financial aid from OSAP at all ><

ugh tell me about it. i'm going to be up to my neck in loans. if you're poor then the government pays for your education, but if you're really rich then your parents will most likely pay for your education but me, i'm stuck in the middle and i'm on my own. my parents aren't helping me pay for college so i'm on my own. it sucks. i had no idea that college was so expensive until this year (senior year). it's crazy how some schools cost 40K a year and then there are those that cost around 10K. blehh

what sucks about the US financial aid system is that the uppermiddle class gets completely SHAFTED. yeah if your family struggles a lot with money, it's easy to get financial aid. and on the other end, if your crazy rich, tuition is not a problem. but if you're somewhere in the middle, it's still almost impossible to pay tuition without aid, and the gov't won't give you money because your parents income is too high.

and tuition for int'l students in canada is still less than HALF of us tuition costs. mcgill int'l tuition is like 12,000-15,000. avg private school in us is like 32,000.

Government funding is why our tuition is so much cheaper than the United States
If you're staying at home your tuition (for an undergrad) is probably around $4, 000-6, 000
Away is laround 12, 000+
international students pay around $23, 000+ which is still cheaper than American tuition...and it's in Canadian dollars

I dunno about the entrance scholarships, but all the universities I've applied to have offered me entrance awards....if I choose to go there
My parents bought RESPs/scholarship bonds, so I don't think I even have to apply for student loans, I'm pretty much covered, plus I'm gonna get scholarships as well

but the government is funding less and less now, so tuition cost is gonna keep going up

Yeah, tuition is hecka cheap in Canada, but it's the living expenses of living outside that costs you. If I do decide to go to Ontario, I'm gonna have to do a student loan as opposed to staying home, where tuition barely costs anything with scholarships etc. So yeah, I don't know what to do yet...

maybe your parents shouldve saved for your education instead of spending lots of money on luxuries?
im really sick of middle class families complaining about college costs

canada has a higher average tax rate than the states so we get more social programs than they do. ie. a fully government-funded health care system and having all major universities receive partial government funding.
I want to rip off your logic and make passionate sense to you.

Because the government doesn't subsidize it and because even the state schools can get away with charging a lot, since doctors can easily pay off loans.
