I like the books that Amy Tan writes.
If you want to read a memoir, On Gold Mountain by Lisa See is good. At least, I liked it.
Umm...I'll be back, if I think of more. xD

Well, I'm sure this has been said zillions of times but Battle Royale by Koushun Takami is a great read. If you want a really light read go for Socrates in Love by Kyoichi Katayama. It's the english translation of the novel Sekai No Chushin de Ai Wo Sakebu. I bought mine online off of Barnes and Nobles' online site.

If you're talking about actual fiction books, I know quite a few Chinese ones, but...don't know if you'd be interested.

though, i am particularly interested in japanese books by japanese authors.
Kazuo Ishiguro
- A Pale View of the Hills
- An Artist of the Floating World
It's difficult to go wrong with Ishiguro.

Someone on soompi recommended recently this book, and I'm currently reading it right now
It's called 'Norwegian Wood' by Haruki Murakami'
i've read it...& out of all the murakami books i've read (norwegian wood, wild sheep chase, wind-up bird chronicle, parts of kafka on the shore...), i'd say that was my favorite...although i didn't entirely enjoy it.

some other books by asian american and asian authors (excluding the obvious -- murakami, amy tan, kazuo ishiguro, chang rae lee):
- snow country, yasunari kawabata
- out, natsuo kirino (won some kind of mystery award in japan, very twisted)
- waiting, ha jin (won the national book award)
- a single shard, linda sue park (won the newbery award! yes, it's a kid's book, but really touching)
- shanghai baby (pretty cover, boring read -- lesson learned; pay attention to that cliche)
asian american authors i keep meaning to read but haven't include lisa see and gish jen. don't know. anchee min, jung chang write about that chinese communist stuff. helie lee is korean american and writes about her experiences. wow, i'm on a roll.

I highly recommend this if you're into dark / twisted stuff. It's so cleverly plotted out and written. Definately one of the most original plots ever. Every character is nicely developed and it just flows so smoothly. There's a twist in every chapter so you'll never be bored. One of my fav. books of all time<3

PLOT: Masako Katori and her coworkers Yoshie, Kuniko, and Yayoi all work the night shift at a boxed lunch factory in the Tokyo suburbs. Each of the women has disagreeable elements in her home life from which she longs to escape (unresponsive or unappreciative families, abusive spouses, overextended credit lines, etc.). When Yayoi snaps one night and strangles her good-for-nothing husband Kenji, Masako and the others must dispose of the body. Led by Masako, the women engage in increasingly grisly business to liberate themselves, not only from evidence of their crime, but from the social and financial burdens that have been suffocating them. Just as things start to go right, everything starts to go wrong: at least two of the women commit careless, lazy mistakes that betray and endanger the others, and Masako must find a safe way out of the danger that threatens to destroy her.
