i was looking into doing the YFU thing to go to korea for the 2006-2007 school year...anyone been apart of it?? or know anyone who has??...i need some insight. T_T;; i have a couple people at my school that came with YFU but they suck and telling me stuff about it.. lol. or some its hard to communicate..:[ ...i wish i knew more languages. T_T;;

i went to my counseler to see if the school can help me with this.. but it was before our spring break, so i dont think she remembers.. :[ ... ill have to go and ask her again asap.

im korean and i want to go to korea, is that bad? hard?
because my friend said that some families dont really want to accept students of the same nationallity because it wouldnt be...a good experience for them..because its the same culture..?? :[ ..but ive never been to korea, and im a "BANANA", but i can speak and read and understand pretty well.( my closest friends are fobs.. so im getting alot better with my korean :] )

anyone have ANY information on this???

i'm applied for YFU Japan scholarship for this summer (6 weeks)... are you doing a full year?

i had 3 friends who did the YFU japan scholarship last year... they had a great time... it doesn't matter if u know the language or not i think... one of my friend went without knowing any japanese....

well... how host families work is that u have to write a letter in ur application and have 8 passport pictures i think... and along with an interview they give u... they'll make a complete profile of u and let the applying host family CHOOSE their host student... so don't worry, ur host family will choose u cuz they like u... smile.gif

well and if it doesn't work out... there are YFU volunteers all over the place that'll b happy to help u out with any problems... and if it really doesn't work out... they'll give u a new host family.... hope that answers some questions... feel free to ask more if u like happy.gif

i'm waiting to see if i get the scholarship this month!!! i'm nervous...

if i was younger... i would love to go to korea too! i just love the korean language and everything!! r u applying for a scholarship or just the regular program? or both? the lucky thing is u can write one application and apply to as many scholarships as u want... happy.gif

i think when he says office means that there's a YFU office around where u live? i had to go to their office to go meet the interviewer... but i applied online... u should get the application online and print it out... then mail it in... then u wait... and they'll give u a call to set up an interview with u (they'll tell u the locaction... or if u really want to go visit the place maybe u should call in?)... anyways i say apply online is the easiest.... here's the site

http://www.yfu-usa.org/

u should proabably look under american student... anyways... hope that helps happy.gif

I have friends who work at YFU, before they started to work there as coordinators and whatnot they were all exchange students to places like Japan, Germany, etc..It's a good program, and if you really want to go to Korea then you'll go to Korea, race does not matter as much as you think, and in any case there are large number of participating host families in each country so you'll still have your pick.

Remember you'll get out of your experience what you put into it, YFU is just a medium in which you can get that experience. Language ability isn't a requirement to go on a YFU program but I really recommend having a good base before you go. I can't really imagine how people can go to a country not knowing a single word of the language yet expect to get a deep understanding of the culture and people

And umm by the way if I'm not mistaken the Korean school year starts around April, so it's alittle late to sign up for 06-07 school year...Guess you'll have to do the 07-08

i know that this thread is dead but ill ask anyways..

im thinking about doing this and i wanna go to either korea, japan, or australia for the summer preferably on scholarships
but im afraid that if i sign up for korea they are going to reject me cuz im korean & a fob ( they wont know but the host family will..)
and i was going to take summer school here for algebra 2 credit
but will i be able to recieve that in other countries or is that just for full year students?

thats a coincidence, i was thinking something along the same lines...

I'm korean and I used to live in Korea until first grade ,but I moved to US and I haven't been able to visit since T_T. I'm going to be in 11th grade next year

I remembered that Korean school year starts off in jan. instead of the fall, so how does that work out?? do you miss a term of school and come back one term late?

and if you go to korea for a year, do you have to make up a year of high school for requirements or does the classes in Korean school make up for it?

thanks~

Ooh how funny, I was just looking into this too (but for summer) and was planning on asking here for info. smile.gif

Does anyone have more info on what they really do there? I read all about how they go on these field trips to historical places, and do cultural things, but what about school? You go to classes right? My main question is...is one of the classes teaching you the language, so like if I went with little background about Korean, would I be taking Korean classes there? Because mainly what I want to do this summer is take classes to teach me Korean, and if that did, that'd be awesome...
I am studying abroad in Korea for 2 semesters!
Read about it here (WordPress) or here (Tumblr).

^ your family doesnt have to host anybody
and the cost varies for different countries
and you can get scholarships so you can even go for free!
