lemme tell you something that i didn't learn until spring quarter freshman year:

it really doesn't matter who your professor is because the people who will know you and grade you are NOT your professors. they're actually TAs. you will be closer to your TA and your TA will know your name and not your professor. in SD, there are "discussions" at least once a week for your classes where you will meet with your TA in a small group of maybe 20? it doesn't matter if your "professor grades hard" or not in the class because they WON'T be doing any grading. your TAs will be.

and i think everything you learn in freshman year, you can pretty much learn by yourself
profs are same all the way imo

Having a good professor can really help though. If you have a good professors then you learn a lot more during lectures and you can spend less time trying to struggle through the material yourself. It really depends on what classes though. I rarely went to discussions because in most of the classes I had my TAs weren't very good. Office hours are a lot more helpful. So yes, your TAs do the grading but who decides what the TAs are supposed to grade you on? The professor. Having a good/bad professor probably won't make or break things, since you need to work hard on your own anyway, but it is ALWAYS better to choose a better professor if you have the option.

^ I can't agree more with you. Having a good professor is definitely important. Some learn better with listening or seeing lectures, whereas others learn better just by reading on their own. I'm one of those who learn better when the professor's teaching is organized, clear, and it's even better when the professor is actually interesting. I had a few classes where I did not have such good professors, due to my late enrollment date, and believe me. I struggled through those classes.

is anyone here an RA or an OL?

i'm really interested in applying for either one of these positions in a year or so biggrin.gif
but i'm worried about the application and interview process cuz it seems like there's a lot to go through before they decide whether or not to choose you >.<

I actually landed an RA job my freshman year. I worked my ass off for it though. Unfortunately, due to financial and personal reasons, I had to turn it down. I say go for it. The process is tough and it's extremely competitive but it's well worth it. Plus if you don't get it this year, learn from your mistakes and apply again next year. You've really got nothing to lose. I'll say this though. Don't be intimidating by the other applicants. Be confident in yourself. Best of luck!

Agreed. In addition, class structure is also related to the professor. Often times, professors may rotate to different TA's, but usually the class structure is consistent. Different professors may have different exam formats or different ways of teaching that maybe IMPLEMENTED within the class, and TAs are often instructed to grade accordingly. This does not apply for all classes, but it does apply for a significant number of them.
I'm really thankful that you're alive. The news about you is my reason for living. We should meet at least once while living. No matter what you're doing be healthy and always live happily. For you being born, for meeting you... I'm so thankful.

^ ERC's writing requirement scares the bageebers out of me. =( I barely survived my two warren writing classes, imagine taking six of them. T_T Though the ERC dorms are pretty nice.

^ that'd be cool biggrin.gif

anyways....for the ERC upperclassmen...

do you know if the MMW books are always the same from year to year?
because i don't want to buy the books and then find out that i can't even use them next year T.T
how often do they even change the editions for the mmw books? <.< >.>

and...if they ARE the same from year to year...
is there anyone who would be willing to sell me their books? biggrin.gif (i might have a couple of friends interested as well...so the more upperclassmen selling..the merrier =))

thank you!
