I got into Sixth College and now reading all this I'm kind of o_o. I'm a Visual Arts (media) major.

..It's those simple words that can make all the difference..

I just got into UCSD--Muir!! Muir was my first choice based off of the description of the curricula on the UCSD website. But then...I just realized that Muir was the concrete campus that I had actually been scorning all this time T_____T

For those in Muir, and even those who aren't, is there anything you can tell me about it? How you like it? Dorms? Curricula? What's good? What's bad?

Also, can you also tell me which college you think is best overall? Taking everything, such as courseload and living environment into consideration, with regard to my major ><

I'm an English-Literature major btw(:

Thank you!

Well trust me you will LOVEEEE Muir's GEs and dorms. Their dorms are pretty big, compared to Revelle, Marshall, and Sixth. I've only been to Warren apartments, and they're nice, but Muir apartments are WAYYYY nicer. And there's a big loft/common area for every two floors. It's really sweet. But I heard ERC dorms are really nice. Haven't been in them though. But anyways, BOTH Muir dorms (Tioga and Tenaya) have been renovated, so everything looks so nice (seriously!). I don't dorm, but my friends do, and I've visited many times.

Curriculum - Muir Writing (MCWP) is pretty difficult (hard to get an A-, people usually get B+'s), but if you work your ass off and you are an english-lit major, you'll be fine. You end up writing two papers (8-10 and 10-12 pages), but they do teach you how to write, seriously. I write many of my essays based on their style and it's all good. Just remember to take easy classes (GE reqs.) when you take Muir 40/50 because you will have to put some time and effort into it. You can't BS the essays, and trust mew I've BS many essays before and done fine. YOu have to actually DO STUFF.
You also have to do 4 different sequences -- all do-able, depending on what you want to take. They're really flexible, so since you're going to be a non-science major, you can take more random classes. The classes for my major completed some of my GE requirements. Seriously, if you did 4 classes each quarter, all GE's, that's already finishing the 4 sequences. And if you did Muir Writing (muir 40 and muir 50/125 or something), that's a total of 14 GEs. PLUS, if you completed some AP course and got AP credit for passing the ap test, you can clear up some classes, such as math (math 10 series, anyone?), etc.

Sierra Summit, the dining hall, well at least there's a sitting area. Food Worx doesn't have tables indoors. It's also easy to get to. Food Worx is pretty far, in Sixth college, from sixth college dorms (log cabins, I guess).

Bad - Muir 40. Muir 50 is much easier. Like I said, I tried pretty hard and got a B+. But it's okay, better than a C+! lol. Parking sucks, but it's okay, we got carpool. We ALWAYS park at Muir lower lots because they have a lot of carpool spots. Nothing really bad about Muir. Although it's farther away from Price Center, but not as far as Revelle (ACK York Hall to Warren Lecture Hall, anyone?!).
I'm really thankful that you're alive. The news about you is my reason for living. We should meet at least once while living. No matter what you're doing be healthy and always live happily. For you being born, for meeting you... I'm so thankful.

i currently live in warren res halls right
its pretty good, it feels like i live in a hotel with small rooms
Warren is pretty modern looking. It offers a couple basketball courts right by the res halls and volleyball courts.
The cafeteria, canyon vista is quite decent, their breakfast is probably the best.

My friend goes to sixth and when he first got there, he hated it. It pretty much looks like a campground with cabins, but imo its a pretty peaceful and relaxing area.
The res halls are 2 stories there and its seperated by gender.

ERC looks amazing, i believe its the newest college out of all of them and from what other people say, their cafeteria is the best. I personally think their food is bland so eh...

Muir has the best campus, their view from the res halls are breath taking. If you get lucky and u get one of the higher floors on tioga, you'll be able to see the beach from your common room / your room. Their food is gooooood .. i love the stir fry there and u guys get the muir surf shop!! So u guys can walk 5 mins from ur dorms, go to the surf shop, rent a board/wetsuit for like $15, get onto the bus for free and then ur at the beach! so unfair 4 me!!

anyways... if you guys have any questions, ill try to help answer them
AND CONGRATS TO THOSE WHO GOT IN!!! it's a great campus!!

So I got into Sixth and I live in LA.

I'm wondering if having a car would be a necessity if I'm going to dorm @_@

Please don't. You don't need a car when you're on campus. The buses go pretty much everywhere you NEED to go to (including Fashion Valley ;D) and you probably will have friends to score rides from. The parking permits are ridiculously expensive and there are never parking spots (especially during the day on weekdays - weekends it's almost empty).

I just found out I got into Warren.
Oddly enough, it was my sixth choice; Sixth was my first. o_o
So anyways, how's Warren like? Much input is appreciated!!!

In terms of living, I'd say Warren is probably the most best-looking part of UCSD. The Canyon Vista cafeteria is conveniently located in close range to all the res halls. The res halls are clean, secure, and if you're lucky enough to get one overlooking the canyon breathtaking. Warren College also has a great grocery store (Earl's Place) that stocks up on all sorts of things.

In terms of GEs, Warren GEs are the second easiest to complete, the most easiest being Muir.

In case any ucsd hopefuls were interested, here are some pics of Warren:

The circular stage is the Warren amphitheater. Usually people walk down the steps to get to reach the main entrance of the Canyon Vista restaurant which sits at the very bottom of these stairs (not visible). Occasionally, you'll see a small group of people performing some sort of dance, act, etc.

In the distance, you'll see the residence halls where all the first year Warren students live in: On the left is Frankfurter Hall, the right is Stuart Hall, and behind these two is Harlan Hall, which where I live smile.gif

Volleyball field and Warren lawn.. the trees are blocking your view of more Warren res halls... these halls are all singles, but they're only for grad students.

Thanks for clearing that up~

I'm really nervous about Sixth after reading about the CAT. And I'm not fond of the cabin-like dorms. Ahhh! >_<

If you don't want to go to reshalls, I suggest you sign up for dorms as early as possible and ask for apartments. I did that and I got into an apartment freshman year, a single too laugh.gif It's farther away from center of campus but it's not too bad and besides, there are shuttles that go around campus anyway smile.gif And yeah, CAT really sucks... -__-

As for CAT professors, I recommend Carlisle (but only for CAT1) and Doppelt (he teaches biomedical ethics, like eugenics, abortion, etc. It was really interesting for me and I liked how specific his essay prompts were unlike Peter John). IMO, you should avoid Peter John because he's mellow but really vague (like he doesn't even hand out copies of the essay prompt - he'd just say something like "Write about how you feel about this" SUPER VAGUE sleep.gif)

For Muir 50 - take the pirates one, if you can. It fills up quick. Or take Politics of the Rainbow with Yumi Pak - very easy and she's awesome, if you're into that stuff.

Oh my! I got into UCSD:Revelle also! >< I'm pretty scared after being currently told that the GE's are hard.
Would anyone like to give me some insight on Revelle College? sweatingbullets.gif

Like... Dorms, life other than school (if there's any), about how many years it will take to complete the GE's, etc? x)
Thanks very much if you do! (=
