well, i wouldn't call them "hot spots"....
some places you would definitely visit near the campus during the school year are places like UTC (outdoor mall with the usual f21, pacsun, etc and department stores... but it definitely cannot hold anything up against the malls in LA...), la jolla village square area (has ralphs, trader joes, starbucks, chipotle, TGIFridays, CVS, etc etc), and la jolla shores (pamphlets from school say it's 1 mile from the west side of campus but it's BS... will take forever to walk there AHHAHA... just take the bus instead tongue.gif). there are also places to explore that are a part of UCSD like birch aquarium and scripps pier (part of the oceanography institution).

as for areas farther away from campus...

if you have a car or your friend has a car with them for college, you can go to pacific beach to shop and eat. they have quite a few stores you can look around for decent prices, not to mention broken yolk restaurant is famous there. there's downtown la jolla on prospect you can check out with stores and boutiques... there are some really good restaurants there too although some of them can get pricey. if you want to party it up you're most likely going to hit the downtown san diego gaslamp district where there are a lot of clubs. hillcrest is probably somewhere you're going to hit up since i remember some frat parties are held there too. feeling for asian? go to convoy for some decent korean/chinese/japanese/vietnamese food. the asian food in SD can't really hold a candle to korean food from ktown, chinese food in SGV, japanese food in little tokyo, or vietnamese food in the OC though. i'm a huge foodie so i can tell you that if you're looking for good asian food in SD, you won't find any that will wow you tongue.gif

now how did i ever ended up talking about food again? :X

Any MAE majors here? I'm going in the fall for mechanical engineering and need some advice on which laptop to buy. I want the Macbook Pro 15" but I don't know if it can run the programs for mech engineering. I'm gonna run windows XP through bootcamp if I do get the MBP. And how is Marshall college? Any others in Marshall?

^ use ratemyprofessor.... if these teacher are teaching I would recommend Johnson for CHEM 6A, Stevens or Eggers for MATH 20A, and Robert Williams for SDCC 1... i really liked these teachers... I didn't have Johnson though for Chem 6A but everyone said she's good. Do not take Viswanathan or Dapper for SDCC 1, i've heard really bad things about them from my friends.

I had Professor Johnson for CHEM6A and CHEM6B and she was awesome. She's really good at teaching (and she writes stuff on the board so that it's easier to take notes) and she seems to genuinely care about her students. Hoeger teaches a lot like Johnson except he's kind of mean... I had him for CHEM6C and he taught well but was difficult to approach because sarcasm is his best weapon -.- Oh, they both allow crib notes for midterms and finals so that's pretty sweet (but I think all CHEM6series are like that)

I had Dipasquale for Chem 6B and 6C. He's really cool and his tests are pretty easy, but the final is somewhat difficult. All the quizzes/exams are multiple choice -- so if you're good at multiple choice, then ^^V . You have to show to class since he has random quizzes, but it's okay because at the end of the quarter he usually ends up making the quizzes extra credit, which can help your grade, plus there are curves. HOWEVER, DO NOT TAKE HIM if you actually WANT to learn anything. He's not a good teacher in terms of teaching. What you'll end up doing is just reading the entire chapter(s) for his exams and you'll be fine. In which case, you'll have to secure good grades (above average) in all the exams and get correct scores on all the quizzes, that way if you totally bomb the final, you'll still get a B. I learned a few things from DiPasquale, but overall he's not a good professor compared to Johnson and Hoeger. Take him if you cannot get in either Johnson or Hoeger.

^ Dispasquale left UCSD.... he's teaching at Berkeley now... that's what he told us when I had him for CHEM6B.... he said his last quarter at UCSD was Spring and then he was leaving... I really liked him too... pretty cool guy.

Woah, I didn't know that! I took Chem 6C with him during my winter quarter, so no wonder I didn't hear about it. ^^;;

Yea I think he was really cool. I think it's kind of messed up when people even try to cheat in his class, considering he makes it so easy. sweatingbullets.gif I remember someone got caught during the first exam! He needs better teaching methods, since he just summarizes from the book, but he is a really nice guy -- definitely really smart and approachable.

^i think its the 21st and the last day to move in is like the 23rd or something... that's what I heard.

Kurisu: I hate it when people tried to cheat in his class... especially when they leave and still have their clickers on so they could change their answers...

Is Math 10A like Calculus AB?

My scores were delayed for my Calculus AB score but I don't think I got a 3 or higher so I was just going to take Calculus AB again at UCSD- John Muir.

i've heard johnson teaches like hoeger so she's pretty cool. i never had her though. i did have hoeger. if you want to learn, i recommend hoeger. a lot of people complain that he is mean, and i agree..he does seem to be a bit more condescending to his non honors students, but he is an ok guy. you learn a lot in his class, and he never (or VERY rarely) fails people. seriously. when i checked my final grade online with everyone else's grades, there were NO Ds or Fs. lowest was C-. his exams are HARd, but it's true when he says, if you do his recommended probs, you can get by in a breeze. since his exams are hard, the curves are pretty generous.

the 20 series seems to be a little more specific and more similar to what you might have had in high school AP classes. most people recommend you taking the 20 series because it keeps your options open if you change majors. some people say it's harder than 10 series. 10 series is more general calc, you learn how to do derivatives and integration and it has stuff that is calc but kind of..not your typical kind of calc ...my roomie is a math major and she was all like "wtf is this?" when she looked at my probs, and she has done all of 20 series with no probs. taking 10 series however limits your major choices if you decide to change...though it hasn't been a prob for me. i went from bio to cog sci and 10 series suffices for both. look around at the majors you might be interested in in case you change...see what they require.

lol my roommate took the ukulele class and she absolutely loved it. she liked it so much she went out and bought her own ukulele after she took the class. i heard moon river every now and then. haha freshmen seminars are meant to be fun and interesting, being only 1 unit and all...so i say you take it because that class is popular and usually has a long waitlist.

I'm trying to figure out the courses i want to take before the date that I actually have to enroll in them by, ( August 25th, 2008-10am) but I can't seem to tell if I'm doing this right online.

I first went on Tritonlink-Current students then I clicked on Schedule of Classes- then I would type in Mathematics.

I went on the Mathematics page and it won't say the course number. I'm trying to have all the course numbers written down before hand so that I can just easily sign up for classes.

Can anybody check to see if this is thew ay I should be approaching this task?

My scores were delayed for my Calculus AB score but I don't think I got a 3 or higher so I was just going to take Calculus AB again at UCSD- John Muir.

Math 10A is exactly like AP Calculus AB.. maybe even easier. Maybe I just felt like it was easier when I had to sit through the class (my boyfriend took it and I went to class with him because I was bored tongue.gif ). Hm.. I would say math 10A is more graphing + derivatives. I don't think you'll do any integration -- that's more math 10B I believe. Math 10C is a tiny bit of intergration, and them mostly vectors and radial graphs or some crap like that.

Math 20 series is more difficult than Math 10 series so I concur with others who have said that you should check on what majors you are interested in in case you need to change majors. HOWEVER, remember that depending on what you want to do with your life, an A+ in math 10A is going to look better than a C+ in Math 20A to grad schools, especially if you end up taking a major that only requires math 10 series. So if math is not your strong point, it might be better to go with the 10 series.

Oh yea and you might want to jot down the section ID or whatever it's called (it's like a 6-digit number on the left) if you want to add in classes real quick (instead of having to search for them) right when it's your time to enroll. You're competing against a bunch of other students who have either the same or close enrollment time, so it's better if you can add classes in real quick. For example, you can add the section id for MATH 10A with Laura Stevens, which can be "629733" (D01 discussion). You will have the option to do this once it is time for you to add classes.
I'm really thankful that you're alive. The news about you is my reason for living. We should meet at least once while living. No matter what you're doing be healthy and always live happily. For you being born, for meeting you... I'm so thankful.

^also, in addition to what Kurisu said about 10/20 series, if you take the 20 series you can always go down the 10 series... For example lets say u take MATH20A in fall but decide that you're just going to take 10 series math than you can take MATH 10B... but if you decide to take the 10 series, you're not allowed to jump up to the 20 series.

that should be taken into consideration too.
