~_~ what type of question is this?
You are battling a Dual core with a single core cpu. Optimized dual core will pwon a single core any day. Might hit better performance with the single core at 4ghz, but thats only because many games just aren't very optimized.

The rest of the specs are about the same... the 2 gig on the dual core machine is imo trivial.

X850 vs 6800 well... I don't really care they are both modern enough to play most games fine.

Well you see....

That is my computer specs vs my friends. He said our computer aren't really different much.

He's com kicks mine in gaming (video card is better) while mine kicks his in multi-tasking.
Is that true? I can understand why, due to his video card but yeh...

I dunno the ATi's lately have all been rather dissappointing, so I'd probably have to say that nVidia 6800's are on par, if not better than an ati x850. But ya.. that's just off the top of my head, I'm running an ATi X700 mobility in my laptop... which dissappoints me compared to the 9800 Pro in my desktop.
I am the minority here.

my previous comp was a 4000+, 2GB RAM, x850xtpe, win xp pro 64-bit and my current comp is a 4400+, 4GB RAM, x1800xl, win xp pro.

games run fine on both but my current one is much better at processing/playing multimedia. my dad is getting me to digitise all our old holiday tapes (from back when handycams used VHS and took the form of 10kg shoulder-mounted mammoths). it can encode analogue source to mpeg2 and burn to DVD on-the-fly. 2-pass xvid is no longer strictly an overnight job either because multitasking performance is more reasonable.

well.. i'm bascially comparing my friends X2 4400 with my 3500.. and basically.. i got my 3500 @ 2.8ghz.. which is around 4000+ speeds anyways.. i noticed a significant speed increase from opening up programs to getting good fps in ggames (with teh same video card).

How MUCH better is all perspective. I mean if you look at the specs of catgoesmeow's computer with the godly video cards (probably obsolete now) compared to my 2ghz opteron at 2.75ghz with a x800 well mine is nothing. But im happy with it. My $500 budget versus his $2000 (dont recall, but its huge) is medocre compared to his but im happy with what mine can do.
Thats what you should get from the computer. If you aren't happy, upgrade and overclock that thing until you are.

Im a fan of dual core because I don't have that. I have physical second computers, but they are nothing compared to this single core Opteron. (opteron basically same as Athlon64, mine is just designed for "server" use)

I'd be curious to see my 3700+ against your 144 I take?

Dual core is nice...but we're barely ready for it. I don't see enough advantages to switch yet.

Not to mention i'm broke.

wow, it wasnt THAT hard to choose between the two =/....

#2 is OBVIOUSLY better, i mean..... DUAL CORE processor and 2.0GB RAM?
the specifications are far better... but i mean, when you put money into consideration...
#2 is ALOT more expensive than #1... so if you're not going to be running 2 HUGE programs at once....
stick with #1... because the dual will pretty much be useless
GONE

You should watch how I use my computer.
Lets just say that I sometimes feel bad for pushing it so much. I LIKE to have things encoding in the background. I like to make sure the CPU is being used. Right now, I just have winamp, aim, and firefox running. But im sure I could come up with some extra tasks if I felt like it to make sure one core is constantly used.

Its a 146 at 2.75ghz your 3700+ has the same 1mb l2. But I know for some reason 3dmark is biased against my CPU. vicx.gif So any good benchmarkers? How about SuperPi? 1M

tell him you'll play Battlefield AND Doom against him at the same time. See who wins.

I would love to have dual core right now. Just all the korean MVs that I cap & encode all the time takes forever and dual core will speed that up significantly since xvid and divx are both multi-threaded now. Those of us who do heavy multitasking with several CPU demanding apps have a REAL need for dualcore. As for games, there's only two games right now that have multi-threaded support but expect more to come.

For the rest of the games right now, sure single core wins out but multicore is far more useful plus even when you're doing light multitasking, your windows experience is far smoother and more responsive. I cannot stand using non hyperthreaded CPUs anymore, too much lag for my taste. You've got one better, two real cores. And your rig is far more future-proof than your friend's.
