VLC (initially VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream video.

Media Player Classic is also another highly recommended player for viewing videos with subtitles. VLC and Media Player Classic are the only two players I ever use to play everything. Media Player Classic is available here.

I'd say Media Player Classic for SRT files, just make sure the SRT and the AVI files have exactly the same filename and the subtitles should display automatically. IMHO Media Player Classic has a better interface, making changing the volume and skipping throughout a video file quick and easy.
But VLC has a better engine and many options that Media Player Classic lacks. Like music videos that are in divx or xvid, I only use VLC player for that cuz I can set the "post processing" to level 6 (max quality) which is something you cannot do on MPC. It makes divx and xvid files look alot better. Try both of them; there are times when one is better than the other and vice versa.
