she's not in the spotlight as much anymore, having recently tied the knot with longtime (i think) boyfriend..i don't know about best selling artist, but she would have to be close to it...she's also considered a canto/mando pop diva...you should give her stuff a try - much better than some of the HK idols now

yea Faye Wong was really popular in the 1990s.... i used to listen to her stuff when i was younger and i still love her older stuff...she also did the theme for Final Fantasy VIII and the theme song for the movie Hero (both are really good)
and i agree with rhap, she is much better than the HK stars that are out now.
From wikipedia: According to The Guinness Book of Records, she has sold 9.7 millons copies of all her albums as of March 2000.

I've only heard her Final Fantasy VIII theme song - Eyes On Me, give it a spin. I heard that she records all of her songs in one sitting, with the lights off - if that's true, pretty cool

Faye Wong is truly talented and unique. She is also a weird one, doing her own thing, and never meeting the expectations of her fanbase or others in the industry.
She got popularity with her music, and followed it up with the film Chungking Express in which she was one of the most classic cinematic characters ever. She was absolutely wonderful in the movie. YOu can't help but love her character. Unfortunately for us fans she didn't do a movie after that for years and years. She instead pursued her music. She's only made like 5 movies, and one lampooned Chungking Express hilariously.
So it's a testament to her abilties that she has sold so many albums without actively seeking the spotlight for promotion. She's a maverick.

That's because she's talented, sings well and actually knows how to produce great music. In her later albums the music she wrote wasn't the type made to be sung in a karaoke bar. Her clear voice and unique singing style (ok granted at times sounds Cranberries-ish, but at least unique to Chinese music) spawned off tons of imitators. She keeps to herself and doesn't do much interviews, which is part of the reason why she always drives the papparazi in a frenzy when they catch sights of her. She said before that she's here to make music, that she doesn't understand why people aren't serious about it and only want to know about her personal life. I like her attitude, she doesn't talk nonsense or acts like a brainless bimbo like many of the nowadays talentless female singers. Or better yet, she doesn't talk, she just sings.

I defy anyone (male or female) to watch the film Chungking Express (her acting debut) and not develop a major crush on Faye Wong. She also did the awesome cover a Cranberries song for the soundtrack that I like better than the original.
Actually, it's just a great movie all around, recommend it to anybody.

Every man has reminiscences which he would not tell to everyone, but only to his friends. He has other matters in his mind which he would not reveal even to his friends, but only to himself, and that in secret. But there are other things which a man is afraid to tell even to himself, and every decent man has a number of such things stored away in his mind. The more decent he is, the greater the number of such things in his mind.
