you live in avalon or portage bay?

avalon is really nice. pricey though.

portage bay is like a cat paradise. everywhere i look, there's a cat.

I live in avalon. My roomates don't have or need cats running around all over the place.

freshmen or transfer (if so where are you transferring from): transfer from Sierra College
major: Art and Design
housing: N/A because I'm not 100% positive if I'm going to Davis yet sweatingbullets.gif
about yourself: Thai-raised Puerto Rican, I'm into all forms of art and language learning smile.gif

I'd really like to go to Davis, the town is so cute, and everyone there's really nice, and it seems like a really good school biggrin.gif
But my dad is pushing other schools u_U; So we'll see haha.

I transferred from there too!! Davis is great and it's close but not TOO close to home! biggrin.gif

I signed a lease with Anderson COurt recently too. I checked the reviews online and it wasn't that good, like people partying virtually everynight and that burglaries happen. Hmm, hopefully thats not true or that it gets better in the fall. =T

I applied to UC Davis and -- like everyone else -- is waiting for the acceptance/rejection letter. D:

Out of all the dorms, which one is considered the 'best' environment? Oh and I hear that your best friend at UC Davis is a bike...and not a car, true? biggrin.gif

^ That's COMPLETELY true. I mean, a car is definitely useful if you want to go anywhere OUTSIDE of the campus, but the bike is VERY useful around campus unless you don't mind walking an average of around 10 to maybe 20 minutes to class.

I mean Unitrans takes you to a majority of other places too, but a car is useful for weekends when Unitrans isn't operating. xDD

If you don't want to be near cows or the smell of cows or have anything to do with cows, SEGUNDO is the way to go. OR even better, Cuarto, but that's off campus and it's kinda far from the classes and all, but you're near Old Tea House and Ohana's =]

ANYWHOOO...

I'm living in SORRENTO next year!! Anyone else living there?

I also recommend Segundo because it
1) has (arguably) the best dining commons,
2) is closest to the ARC/gym (which you will love),
3) is closest to Rite-Aid (where nearly all of your food-shopping will be done here, not Safeway nor other supermarkets), and
4) is close to the University Mall (however, Cuarto is the closest by one block).

As for it's proximity with the lecture halls, people say Tercero is the closest, which it is, but I don't think it matters if you're not going to take a lot of science classes because most of the buildings next to Tercero are mostly for the sciences.

I don't know much about Cuarto. Sorry!

If you made the icon that I am using, please PM me so I can credit you.
Thanks!

Cuarto is actually off-campus, but is only so by one block or so.
I'm not too sure if all Cuarto dorms are designed in an "apartment style" but the ones i crashed in for a couple of days were like that.
With Cuarto, it'll be a totally different experience from the rest of the other dorms, but you'll make tighter and closer relationships with your suite-mates.
I think one advantage Cuarto students have over other dorm students is that because you'll be off-campus you'll be able to familiarize yourself with Davis and not just the campus. I've had some friends who knew nothing outside of campus and were really confused the first couple of months after moving out.

Tercero
This is the dorm i lived in and just wanted to include some insider's perspective.
I actually loved tercero. i lived in the letter buildings, which you'll learn to find is the oldest dorms in davis.
the dorms here are smaller than those in segundo, which i really liked cause you really come to make a stronger connection with more people. although there were some dorm mates i never actually got to meet.

i dont know how it is in segundo or other dorms, but in tercero letter buildings there were special interest buildings.
i lived in the international house, dubbed Hamm House. there are other program houses such as the asian building, women-only building, latin[@] building, engineer building, drug-free building, etc.

it is true that you'll occasionally smell the cows. the dairy barn is right across from the street. but you'll be closest to all the buildings and the silo <-- a food court area. [i never minded the smell anyways... sooo yeah]

Biking
The only reason you'd be in a bike accident is if you don't follow the law.
there are actual bike cops here and they will stop you if you dont stop at a stop sign or if you dont have a bike light at night. it sounds silly, but the longer you stay in davis the more you realize that its not stupid.

I see some occasional stragglers who have a hard time adjusting to davis biking, which makes me laugh, these instances are:
-those who are biking on the pedestrian side walk [bikers are NOT pedestrians].
-biking on the wrong bike lane [bike as if driving a car, always on the right lane]
-biking on the wrong gear [this is the most hilarious one of them all, somehow they forget or don't know how to switch gear so they''re peddling super fast but only going so far or they're really struggling when going uphill when they should lower their gear and so on. ]

1) Where can I go to find a roommate that is from San Jose?
2) How many ppl can u dorm with and what is the typical cost?
3) If I take a placement test at a CSU or community college n pass , but didn't take the class, can i still use this passing score to take classes at UCD without taking UCD placement test?
4) Is the placement test at a community college easier than at UCD? If yes, should I take a summer class at a community college for english n math before entering UCD?
5) If i live in a dorm, would I need a car my first year just in case i need to go to the bank, shop, n ect?

1) Where can I go to find a roommate that is from San Jose? Find someone who is from San Jose and apply for housing together. Or use Facebook to meet someone from San Jose?
2) How many ppl can u dorm with and what is the typical cost? It depends on the dorm, but I've seen a maximum of 4 people in a room before. Typically it will cost around 2-3k if I remember correctly, but it depends on the dorm and how many people.
3) If I take a placement test at a CSU or community college n pass , but didn't take the class, can i still use this passing score to take classes at UCD without taking UCD placement test? Unfortunately no, you must take the placement at UCD.
4) Is the placement test at a community college easier than at UCD? If yes, should I take a summer class at a community college for english n math before entering UCD? You need to pass the placement test in UCD first before receiving credits for a math/science class. Unless you are waived from the placement test (i.e. your SAT scores are high)
5) If i live in a dorm, would I need a car my first year just in case i need to go to the bank, shop, n ect? No, you will not need a car and it is not worth it. I think first year students are not allow to have parking permit on campus. There are unitrans (London buses) on campus that is free for students so you can take it to go to places such as the bank, shops, etc. Also downtown is right next to campus so everything is really walking distance. smile.gif

good luck and do not worry! everything will be fine tongue.gif

OMG. So truee. The rooms are soo much closer to everyone else's so I can just randomly walk in and no one would seem to mind.

HAMMM HOUSEEEEEE!!!! 08-09 here!! They did some repainting so I'm sorry to say but the flags on the third floor are now half gone.

what do you consider "best" environment? haha. i lived in cuarto last year and it was the mini cooperttt. haha. my friends had HUGE parties in their dorms and never got caught/written up. plus the dorms are like apartments, so its just more comfortable. 1 bathroom to 4 people. better than sharing with the whole floor imo. segundo and tercero, you`ll meet more people though. segundo and tercero also have better dining commons, but apparently castilian (in cuarto) has a good one too? mine kinda sucked. but you get over it fast...you end up just eating whatevers there regardless of if it sucks or not. mmmm...yeah.

and a bike will be a decent friend if you enjoy biking. i personally recommend the bus. biggrin.gif haha. but even better? find other first years who have cars, or upper classmen who drive. it'll make your life MUCH easier.

OH NOESS!!!!!! i loved those flags!!!! D:
do they have any plans on repainting them? i know a couple of years ago they painted over the flags because they were so old...
i hope they put them back up!! i used to go to other buildings and they were so white and dull.... tongue.gif
im such a dork... i just got really excited reading your post about how you live in hamm house. XD
jajaja, i lived in the second floor suite-styled dorm room. biggrin.gif

i would think...around the 20th, or 21st-ish? Some UCs surprise you earlier, and some wait until the end of March. it really depends...like, i remember last year, UCI acceptances were a week (or was it a couple of days) before UCD's.

anyway. GOODLUCK ON FINALS EVERYONE. it's in...a week.
ugh. i'm currently working on a research paper for asian american studies and i'm dyingggggg. =(
