Eun Ji-won Puts His Pride as Dance Singer at Stake
[2009-12-11]

Singer Eun Ji-won, who is a former member of the 1990s idol boy band Sechskies, debuted as a solo hip-hop artist in 2000 shortly after his group was disbanded. His first four albums focused solely on the hip-hop genre. But for his just-released fifth album entitled "Platonic," Eun has chosen the electronic hip-hop dance song "Siren" as the title track despite opposition from his agency.

Eun said, "When I had just debuted solo, I was engrossed in the world of hip-hop because I was working with such renowned hip-hop artists as Drunken Tiger. But this time I chose a dance song because I wanted to show that my dancing skills were still good. I have become so used to hip-hop that dancing is a bit of a challenge to me, but if I don't start dancing now, it'll be too late. I am not as good at dancing as today's idol singers. My choreography this time is the revived form of the 'dog leg dance.' I call it a 'guileful dog leg dance.'"

◇"Love" as never-changing subject in music
But despite the title track, Eun's fifth album is still based on hip-hop. It was produced in cooperation with the hip-hop producer Keeproots, who is Eun's close friend. The singer also broadened his musical spectrum by combining hip-hop with his favorite music style. His new album is reminiscent of 1980s pop. It contains the euro-sound track "Out Of Control," the old Miami-style hip-hop number "160" and the lounge-style "Just Like The First Time," as well as the winter version of Eun's hit song "Dangerous" and the Latin jazz version of "Adios."

One of the most noteworthy tracks is "160," which features Lee Soo-keun, who appears along with Eun on the KBS TV2 show "Happy Sunday." Eun said, "Soo-keun included improvised free-style rap in this song. The '160' refers to Soo-keun's height, the beats-per-minute of this song and also my 'IQ' that my teammates form 'Two Days and One Night' have given me."

Eun says the title of his new album, "Platonic," refers to pure love rather than just mental love. "Siren" is about a man whose friend's girlfriend falls in love with him. Another song, "Everything," is about a man who promises to love one woman, and "Just Like The First Time" is a pledge to keep loving feelings always as fresh as when the two people just met.

Eun said, "I asked the songwriters to write something that I have never experienced so far. When my girlfriend hears 'Siren,' she didn't like it. She said that a guy must adhere to his own principles instead of wavering. 'Just Like The First Time' was written specifically for my girlfriend."

Eun says he feels happiest when he works in his recording studio but feels pressure when performing on stage. He said, "I'm not tired even after spending four days in a row in my studio. But when I sing on stage, I feel like I'm being evaluated. I hate that. I am comfortable appearing on variety shows, so I'm not scared of cameras. I want to hold concerts more often because only people who like my music come to see them."

◇Real Eun Ji-won on "Two Days and One Night"
Though Eun is an ambitious singer, during his hiatus he kept appearing on the variety show "Two Days and One Night" where he has the nickname "Eun Choding." Eun says he enjoys filming the show because it is a 100 percent unscripted reality show where he can display his real-life personality. He adds that what people see on stage is probably false compared to what they see on "Two Days and One Night." He said, "I have been on this show for two and a half years. It was the hardest thing for me so far. Every week, I receive more difficult challenges. We usually shoot it on Fridays and Saturdays. When Monday arrives, I get indigestion. But thanks to this show I have made good friends."

Eun says that to him Kang Ho-dong is the best counselor in terms of marriage and personal relationships. He also cherishes his friendship with MC Mong and is willing to do anything in the world for him. While shooting the show, he has discovered places that he would like to visit and food he wants to try with his girlfriend. He said, "I remember the traditional house village in Haenam and the scenic Geoje Island. I even had an urge to sell my house in Seoul and move to Geoje. I liked Naju gomtang and tteokgalbi in Damyang. They were very delicious."

Eun says he trusts his girlfriend, who is two years his senior and who is also the sister-in-law of soccer star Lee Dong-kuk. He met her in Hawaii when they were both working part-time in the same store. She was his high school sweetheart. He reunited with her nine months ago after coming across her picture on the personal blog of singer J. Eun said, "I feel respect for her when she thinks ahead. Perhaps that's because she's older than me. She's my best friend but she's also like a mother to me because she always cares about me. I see in her an ideal 'spouse.' But rather than getting married, I am eager to have children. Even when I get married, I want things to stay as if we're still dating."

Eun says he has not faced any inconveniences since disclosing his girlfriend. What really causes him inconvenience is the fact that he comes from a famous family. A picture showing him at a ceremony marking the 30th anniversary of the death of late President Park Chung-hee, his grandfather, was posted on the Internet, drawing significant attention. Eun is the grandson of President Park's elder sister, Park Kwi-hee, and the nephew of former Grand National Party Chairwoman Park Geun-hye.

Eun said, "I have attended this ceremony every year, but it's become especially noteworthy this time because my popularity has risen since I began appearing on 'Two Days and One Night.' I don't know anything about politics and I have no intention to use my family background. I simply followed my father to this family occasion."

SS501's Kim Hyun Joong mocked senior Eun Ji Won who was in a boy band called Sechkies in the late 90's and early 2000's. Sechskies was also from the same entertainment company(DSP Entertainment) and it was absolutely hilarious!

On the December 11th episode of SBS Intimate Note, the stars formed teams and presented an individual talent to receive the most amount of popularity votes.

Kim Hyun Joong did a parody of Eun Ji Won's rap from the Sechskies hit track "Pom Seng Pom Sa," in a very comical manner.

To this Eun Ji Won stated, "It's EXACTLY the same."

For those of you youngins who are unfamiliar with Sechskies, they were the #2 boy band back in the day, during the H.O.T era. These two boy bands were considered rivals and they really dominated K-Pop... ahhh the good old days.

I really have to hand it to Jiwon, he definitely knows what he's doing. It's nice to know that it was he himself who chose Siren to be the title song. Like his agency, i was also a bit apprehensive with Siren as the title track. I didn't think it was good enough (as a comeback song). But after seeing the MV (despite the you-know-what) and his first live performance, i do believe now that Siren is the perfect comeback song for him. Hopefully it would go far and make a mark.

& yes Jiwon, your dancing skills are still good. It doesn't matter if its not as good as the idols of today cause for me you are the best dancer out there. LOL.

160. Haha, that surprised me, i didn't think it had something to do with his IQ. But LOL at Sugeun's height. I think 160 is the song that took me the longest before i got to appreciate it. It sounded weird to me at first but hey its also a fun song so its okay. Everytime i listen to the song though, i always lose my breath for some reason. Jiwon is definitely one hella of a rapper. It's insane!

He only sang 1 song though. *bitin* He still wore the jumpsuit, but a white jumpsuit instead with the black and red vest. The MuBank stage was a lot cooler. It was okay, but there was more of the oooomph factor in yesterday's performance. He looked more confident this time though. It must be the white jumpsuit, he looked a lil bit chubbier in it hehe.

In short, i like the black jumpsuit with the cap on and without shades a lot more!

Just finished watching EJW performance in YT, G you're right. I think yesterday performance got more UMPH than today. I like the black jumpsuit and the cap better. I don't know... something is lacking today in his performance. maybe because he's wearing white?

새로운 비상을 꿈꾸는 은지원, 4년만의 정규앨범으로 돌아오다

전 연령층에서 폭 넓은 사랑을 받으며 이제는 국민 예능이 되어버린 KBS 2TV의 <1박 2일>. 그 중심에 그가 있었다. 90년대 말에서 2000년대 초까지 아이돌 1세대라고 할 수 있는 젝스키스의 리더였던 은지원. 이제는 아이돌 이미지에서 진짜 '아이'스러운 '초딩'이미지를 얻은 그지만 가수란 직업으로 살아온지 어느덧 13년차, 살아남기 힘들고 매체에 조금만 비추지 않으면 멀어지는 대중들의 관심에서 13년동안이나 음악을 하면서 가수로, 연예인으로 항상 인기의 중심에 서 있던 그가 정규앨범간의 기나긴 공백을 깨고 드디어 돌아왔다.

같이 <1박 2일>에서 활약하고 있는 이수근이 피처링한 '160'이란 곡을 제외하고, 앨범 명인 [Platonic]에서도 느껴지듯 이번 앨범의 주제는 '사랑'이다. 대부분의 유행가와 대중가요들이 '사랑'을 주제로 한 곡을 많이 부르고 있지만 힙합 가수로 이미지를 개선 한 후 한 앨범에 한 트랙 이상은 '사회 비판'적인 노래를 실는 힙합가수들의 성향아닌 성향(?)대로 은지원 역시 그 룰을 잘 따라왔던 게 사실이다. 그러나 이번 앨범은 앞서 언급한 것처럼 은지원이 어깨에 힘을 빼고 자연스러운 음악을 한 것이기에 '사회비판'보다는 '대중적 공감대'를 추구하려한 노력이 많이 엿보인다. 타이틀 곡의 [싸이렌]과, 누가 봐도 타이틀 곡으로 할 지 고민이 되었을 것 같은 [Platonic](앨범 제목이기도 하니)이란 곡을 비롯하여 수록된 곡들의 경우, 타이틀 곡이 무색하다고 할 정도로 '힙합 가수 은지원'이라는 타이틀보다 '가수 은지원'의 '사랑 이야기'라는 느낌이 가득하다. 한 없이 핑크빛 멜로디를 뿌린 것은 아니지만 쌀쌀한 겨울 꽤나 따뜻한 노래를 들고 왔다고나 할까. 3집 [만취 in HIPHOP]앨범으로 힙합 팬들의 마음을 열고 힙합 가수로 인정받던 은지원이 다양한 인터뷰 매체에서 직접 "이번 5집은 댄스 앨범이다"라고 언급할 만큼 이번 5집은 힙합가수로의 어깨힘을 빼고 조금 더 대중적으로 다가간 느낌이다. 특히 요 몇년간 은지원의 굵직한 랩 (확실히 3집을 계기로 타이거 JK에게 음악적 영향을 많이 받았다는 느낌이 든다)만 듣다가, 몇년만에 특유의 비음이 섞인 보컬과 나긋나긋한 랩을 들으니 나 역시 달달해지는 기분이다.

예능 프로그램에 출연하는 와중에도 매년 앨범을 내어 가수로서의 본분 역시 지켜왔던 은지원과, 그의 앨범을 듣고 기다려왔던 팬들에게 있어 이번 앨범은 남다른 의미를 지닌다. 그도 그럴 것이 4년만에 내는 정규 앨범, 4집이 나온 이후로 4년만에 나오는 5집이기 때문이다. 예능에서 초딩으로, 음악에선 좀 노는 형들의 이미지를 지니고 있던 은지원이 가벼운 가면과, 무거운 짐을 벗어버리고 들고 온 것이 바로 이번 앨범. 때문에 앨범이 공개된 12월 10일, 각 음악 스트리밍 사이트에서 네티즌들의 의견은 반반이었는데 기존의 골수팬인 경우 '조금 더 은지원 스러운 앨범이다'라는 의견인 반면, 힙합 가수로 인지한 팬들의 경우 '실망했다'거나 '음악 색이 바뀌어서 어떤 평가를 내려야 할 지 모르겠다'라는 의견을 담고 있다. 그러나 이러한 의견이 나올 것은 이미 예견된 사실이었는지도 모른다. 타이틀 곡인 '싸이렌'의 뮤직비디오에서 파격적인 삭발 레게머리에, 일명 '개다리춤'이라는 것까지 추며 POP한 느낌을 강조한 은지원 역시 앨범 발매에 앞서 인터뷰에서 밝혔는데 "나이가 나이인만큼 (20살에 데뷔한 은지원은 이제 33살을 바라보고 있다) 아마 이게 마지막 댄스 곡 앨범이 될 것 같다"라고 말하기도. 때문에 은지원에게 이번 5집은 정규앨범의 오랜 공백기를 깬 앨범이기도 하거니와, 오랜 시간 기다려온 팬들에겐 2000년 5월의 마지막을 함께했던 나머지 다섯 남자가 한없이 그리워질 것 같은 음반이라고, 그리고 우리가 잊고 있었던 그의 보컬로서의 재능이 제대로 느껴지는 앨범이라고 감히 말할 수 있다. 사실상 내년이면 젝스키스 해체 10주년을 맞는 것을 감안하여 그가 팬들에게 하나의 작은 선물같은 앨범을 낸 것은 아닌가라는 생각이 들 정도였으니까.

물론 이 앨범은 앞선 3,4집 그리고 몇장의 싱글 앨범에서 보여줬던 그가 했던 음악, 힙합이란 장르와는 확실히 다른 색을 보여준다. 힙합보다 조금 더 부드럽고, 조금 더 대중적인 댄스라는 장르에서 줄타기를 하는 앨범이지만 확실한 건 단지 은지원을 초딩, 유치한 연예인 등 예능적 이미지로 생각했던 사람이라면 이번 앨범을 통해 그의 본업인 가수로서의 재능을 이 앨범을 통해 느낄 수 있다는 것이다. 개인적으로 가장 좋다고 생각되는 곡은 'Everything(Feat. 길미)'와 '처음처럼만'.

I think the MusicBank stage was better prepared for him. The background fit the song better as opposed to the mere stage on MusicCore. But I kinda agree with happykTee about being able to see the choreography better...haha can't help but wonder if they were inspired by Mc Mong and his skeleton style with those bony masks the backup dancers were wearing...

I think (and I have to agree with everybody) that the MuBank stage just had more wow effect, maybe because it was his FIRST comeback day. And I think it just had to do with the lights and "stage", I mean if he was wearing this white suit and then it was pure black all around - it would have been "wow" too, right?

Haha G! LOL at "he looks chubbier" in white. Hehe. He does look cleaner and more crisp in white. Black is his mysterious and covert look. Hahaha. Hope he gets to wear red as a base color. Just imagining it! Hehehe.

EDIT EDIT: You know the feeling of when you're fever is super high you get delirious and you mix reality and dreams. That's how I felt all day. I was super sick and I couldn't really rest well, I keep hearing Siren in my mind and it felt like I was in MuBank watching him perform. BICHOSO!! I've gone crazy.
