don't you just hate it when you're about to leave the house and you realise your phone is about to run out of battery?

Toshiba Corporation has announced that they have developed an ultra-rapid recharging lithium-ion battery capable of reaching 80% recharge in about 1 minute. They are planning for commercialization in 2006.

Lithium ion batteries have traditionally required a long amount of time to recharge from a high energy density, but this new lithium ion battery uses nanoparticles for its negative pole.

These nanoparticles can smoothly absorb and store lithium ions, and have the distinction of not disassembling the organic electrolytes even if recharged quickly. Toshiba has developed technology to equally fix these nanoparticles, and turned them into an electrode.

This allows lithium ion batteries with a high energy density to be quickly recharged, and in addition, a decreased capacity of under 1% even after 1,000 recharges. Furthermore, the batteries retain an 80% capacity even at temperatures under -40 degrees Celsius.

Toshiba will be conducting product development for lithium ion batteries with more power and industrial use, and plans on including them in notebook PCs and mobile phones.

this is actually last year's news but i only read it recently because we're soon going to be seeing this stuff on the shelves.

anything about it's capacity? Will capacity improve with nano?

^ if they can increase conduction of the lithium ions in a carbon-based anode through the use of metallic nanoparticles, then i'm sure it's possible for a similar material to act as an additional ion store instead of conduction channels, but i don't think they're going to opt for the storage solution - that would be like building a lot of freeways, then using the roads as parking space, not to mention that the increase in capacity wouldn't be that great.

... what i meant to say was, i think the capacity of the new battery would be similar to earlier versions

In China, they have those cellphone charging stands on the streets, and for a really decent price, you can charge your phone in 1 minute dry.gif US is so slow with tech dry.gif
