Intel Pentium D 930 3.0Ghz Presler 800MHz 2 x 2MB L2 Cache FSB LGA 775 Dual Core

OR

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2.0Ghz Manchester 2000MHz HT 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Dual Core

Oh, i have a question, why does the Intel have 1Ghz higher then the AMD but they are around the same price?
i never use AMD before/

i'd say you get the AMD, even though not alot of program support 64bit platform. doesn't really matter about the GHz nomore, is all about the FSB and Cache size. as for the price you notice how Pentium is 800mhz and the AMD is 2GHz, thats your difference

I personally would get the X2.

AMD have lower clocked CPU's because they don't need the speed for their pipelines, which are a lot shorter than Intel's. To push the same amount of data as an AMD rig, Intel has to beef up their clock speeds. That's why you can have a 2.2GHz AMD running more efficient than a 3.4GHz Intel. This might help you as far as Dual Cores go.

Get the X2.

Intel Pentium D 930 3.0Ghz ~$330
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ ~$300

Benchmark Reference

It really comes down to what you'll be using your computer for. If you are a gamer, then get the X2, For multitasking and photoshop work, get the intel. The prices are so similar that it wouldn't matter unless you want to save $30. I would really be more worried about which motherboard and chipset you choose and get the processor that matches compatibility-wise.

The AMD is the better all-rounder.

both are pretty good, the AMD just puts out more processing power per watt

unless you already have old memory that'll work in the new motherboard, I'd say get the AMD if they're similarily priced. Just be sure to factor in the cost of the motherboard as well. Like others have stated, the AMD is faster by a big margin in games. And you're not really giving up much in video/audio encoding tasks. The AMD also runs alot cooler during idle and under full load conditions, drawing less power in the process (hence more power per watt like what Boka said). Price is the only thing Intel's current chips can do to compete against AMD at this point in time.

AMD dual cores beat out the Intel equivalent by a small margin.
Note AMD chips are more power for the dollar.
Another example where more expensive doesn't equate to more better.
AMD all the way biggrin.gif

lol, if you're going with INTEL, don't get the 930. get the 920 and OVERCLOCK that thing to 4.1Ghz+. make sure you have good cooling, though.

but anyways.. depends mostly on personal choice. whichever you like better, get it. ^__^
with intel, you can use DDR2 RAM (I'm selling some btw o_o), but with AMD, you only can use DDR RAM. (unless you're going for the socket 940 ones)

DDR and DDR2 makes no sig difference. UNless its DDR800 or more. and the new AMD socket is coming out to be compatable with the new DDR.

The AMD may be the better buy since you get more power for your money, but personally I have always stayed with Intel due to loyalty and the fact that they are excellent customer service. I had a AMD once and it died on me and even though it was still covered under warranty, it took many hours on the phone with AMD to get the RMA process going.

As for Intel, I fried an Intel motherboard and I was able to get it replaced within a week. I'm sure they would do the same with a processor. For me, price isn't the only factor. Customer service helps with my decision too. Just my 2 cents.

PS Why not get the 830, unless you are going to overclock. And if you are, since the 9xx series have smaller architecture. they are alot easier to overclock and you should just get the 920.

if you are gaming, i would suggest Athlon 64. if for programs like photoshop and video editing i would suggest a P4 LGA775. but me being a gamer i got a Athlon 64. turned out well for games and not that much slower for programs. But all AMD chips have vcores of 1.3 to 1.4. Where as the pentiums run bloddy hot underload.(i'm talking 60degrees!). amd's would run around 30degrees idle and 40max load. Which is considered a significant different from the p4 range. overall amd's are probably the best buy.

Let's use cars for example:

Intel = Mercedes Benz

AMD = Jaguar

get the picture? smile.gif

are you sure about that statement? that amd's heat up faster? i think you are thinking of AMD XP's. not the 64bit range. Athlon XP's run at like 1.6vcore and freaking hell thats high. they sit around 40degrees with decent cooling.
here were my specs.

Athlon 2500 XP 1.68Vcore (stock) @ 1887mhz (cooled with a thermaltake Volcano 12@ 2200rpm)
cold boot: 35
idle: 38
load: 55

Athlon 3200 64 1.34vcore (stock) @ 2000mhz (cooled with a zalman CNPS7000CU @ 1300rpm)
cold boot: 22
idle: 26
load: 32

now can you see the diference ?
here are my friends intel specs

intel prescott 3.2ghz 1.5vcore (Stock) (cooled with zalman CNPS7000CU @ 2500rpm )
cold boot: 47
idle: 50
load: 68

now there is something obviously wrong with intels... the heatsink will melt your finger when you touch it.
