ive been wondering about this recently..

when did the term actually become used/widely known and who really started or pioneered it?

i only got into kpop like..2 years ago, so i have little to no clue as to who came before boa. rofl

but now i know that groups such as shinhwa, HOT, GOD started like..10 years ago i think? something like that

who was before that?

(I think) 1997-1998 was when Kpop was in its prime... And people coined the term Kpop. H.O.T, Sechs Kies, SES and all of them came out in 1997 and then shinhwa and finkl in 1998. GOD was like 1999 or 2000 (i'm not really into them).

I don't really remember Kpop before that as I wasnt very into it except like Roora in 1994 or something.

^ actually H.O.T debuted in 1996, Sept. 7th 1996 to be exact ^__^

I think too that it was around 1997 and beyond that KPOP started to get known among non-koreans...

i think kpop started off like around.... 1996-1997 but it sorta died out till H.O.T. G.O.D. S.E.S. came out it started back up again and then Shinhwa, Fly To The Sky, Boa, DBSK and more came out and it became more popular worldwide

Yeahh. taiji started it all. sorta. Because he brought Rap, Rock, and parts of Ballad to korea, which is the music we have today.

If you're really wondering how he (Tetra) looks...click; although I highly advise that you don't-- for your sake.

i always thought S.E.S (Beautiful Eugene Noona) brought the rise of KPOP with their dancing, looks, personality, and singing talent.

its definitely seotaiji... seotaiji wa aiduhl

goodness... the guy probably did just about every type of music genre in existence.. although, now, he's sticking mostly to rock.

alot of people don't remember him cause he's... well... from the earlyyyyyyy 90's. (i believe 1992 was his big year with "nan arayo")
anyway, he was incredibly young, then too.. compared to all of the other artists who were out at that time.
except, now, he's OLD! wahahahha

when it was announced that seotaiji wa aiduhl was going to break up and retire, there were lots of suicide notes. i don't know if the suicides were actually carried out, i just know that there were people who sent the letters to newspapers saying things like "if they break up, im going to kill myself!" seotaiji probably wanted to retire being remembered as the one who revolutionized korean music.
well, anyway... they broke up and then seotaiji "disappeared" for a few years.
he then returned to korea after being largely influenced by american rock in... *drumroll* america..!
of course, when he returned, he was welcomed and all... but he wasn't as popular with his new music styles. which explains why people probably don't remember him as the "godfather of k-pop" as they should be.

i would definitely agree with seotaiji as well for modern kpop.

some could argue that it was sobangcha that started to move away from really old school stuff...

what IS k-pop, is what i want to ask.

kang soo ji, kim nam jung, so bang cha, etc.
the 70, 80s songs dont count as kpop?

why? just because most people in my age dont know them?

^I assume Korean pop culture in the music sector is when Western-style pop music really began to play a big part in Korean music.
In other words, when Seo Taiji debuted with the other two guys back in late 80s or early 90s or whatever. Despite the fact there were others who spread Western culture before him when you hear 'Kpop' you tend to think of teenybopper ballads with crap rapping. tongue.gif In that case Seo Taiji really did start the whole Kpop thing.
