sorry if i sound stupid.
but what exactly is this "emo" thing?
and what IS emo music?
that's extremely controversial.
if you're talking about the word on its own, it has basically progressed into a stereotype - the girls jeans, hair over eyes, studded-belts. but it's not an adjective, it's a noun; and it's basically a genre of music that can branch out into 57302 other different genres; and it's just very obscure.
so i can't give you "real emo bands", because that's all a matter of perspective, but i can give you good music. i like circa survive, hidden in plainview, etc. so i'm assuming we'll have other bands in common as well.

post-hardcore is a sub-genre of hardcore.
they both seem to overlap it seems since no one can classify either.
people who talk about my chemical romance say they're emo, others say posthardcore(which they are).
i'm not good at recommending emo bands.
i will eat chu.

& currenlty, I'm into Panic! At the Disco... reminds me a bit of Fall Out Boy, though.
heartwreckss gave a nice list, but I bet you'll have too much fun deciding who to check out. IMO:
Anberlin
Armor For Sleep
Fall Out Boy
Jack's Mannequin/Something Corporate
Mae
My American Heart
Panic! At The Disco
Quietdrive
Saosin
Senses Fail
Taking Back Sunday
Underoath
If you really aren't satisfied with wreckss' list, here's a few others from the top of my head:
Hawthorne Heights
Just Surrender
Jamison Parker
From First to Last
Funeral for a Friend
Bleed the Dream
Letterkills
Story of the Year
& lastly, you can learn more about these bands by checking out their myspace site (one of the only reasons I even have a myspace is to learn about new bands.. anyway..)
