So, today I just started my computer, like any other day. And when it got to the start up screen (the black screen with writing on it) it says that "WARNING: Chip fan failed or too slow"

What does that exactly mean? unsure.gif

Is my computer in any sort of danger? blink.gif excl.gif

There could possibly permanent damage if your computer overheats. This can happen easily with more powerful CPU / GFX card and collection of dust + poor circulation. Try cleaning out the dust and monitor the fan speed and temperature for a while. But I would be prepared to change the fan just in case. Afterall it's not too expensive too replace a fan as opposed to the possible cost of replacing the chip.

ugh, dust. ><" I bought my laptop in December 2005, would there be a lot of dust? ><" but how can you clean out the laptop's inside? o__o" I heard that you shouldn't touch the insides of a desktop thingy though from someone.. o__o"

Mr virus
Yes, running your computer without a chipset fan isn't a good thing. You might not notice the problems in the beginning, but things the chipset controls is the data written to your hard drive, your sound, and the data between the PCI and processor. In other words if that thing goes whack you can have disk corruption, loose data. And loosing your motherboard would not be out of the question.

What do I recomend?
Just spray it with a can of air. If it doesn't get going, my advice is look up the Zalman passive northbridge cooler. Make sure it will clear your video card. That thing will run without fans and will cool more than adaquately. The problem with your motherboard with a chipset fan is the heatsink is very tiny. My motherbaord doesn't have a chipset fan. It has a big heatsink on it instead and cools passively.

Dude with the watermelon avator
Laptops have nothing to do with chipset fans.
However, I will aswer your questions as well. How long does it take go get dusty? Well where do you use it? On your desk? on your bed? On the carpet?
My desktop computer gets clumpy with dust within a month. I clean my computer every two weeks... you know some guys clean and wax their car weekly? Well, my computer is my focus. Car is clean too...
As for your laptop, the best advice I can provide is spray with a can of air into the exhaust vent. With any luck it will dislodge any clumps of dust on the fan and on the heatsink fins. Its best to find out how to get to your CPU though. I can tell you the exact steps on how to do it with a IBM T20 series laptop, but each model of laptop is different. Some lets you access it from the bottom. Others make you take out the keyboard... keyboards are sometimes held down from the bottom with screws... others are screwed in on the top. Apple notebooks are latched on on the top, slide down the two tabs on the top near the number keys and the keyboard pops up. Full access to hard drive, and CPU so you can clean it.

Yes... people say don't touch the hardware. The concern is ESD. Electrostatic discharge... you know shuffle on the carpet for 10 minutes then poke someone for a fun zap. That zap can damage or destroy a lot of different computer hardwares. The most sensitive is RAM. Most of the time it will not kill it. Instead, it will mess up a little... then your computer will be horribly unstable. Crash and bluescreens RANDOMLY
How do you avoid it? Well, for a desktop computer, if the power supply is plugged in, just touch the metal case or power supply case. That will ground you. The sink is also nicely grounded as well.
For a laptop... I honestly don't know... My computer is usually within reach so I poke computer then work on laptop internals.

Was that enough info?

can of air = compressed air in a spray can

You can find them at any place that sells computer or electronic parts. You use it to blow concentrated air so that you can remove dust from electronics or keyboards. Or if you flip it upside down and spray, you can give your worst enemy frostbite and maybe they'll lose a finger or something. Works great against snails too.

AUGHHH. I'm a girl too!!!! flip it u upside down? muehahee. I keep my laptop on my desk... buuut, what if I spray air into it and it dislodges weird tiny thingies that stick out of chips?. I dunno what to call them. o__o" buuut, if I don't ever dust it out, is that bad? TT___TT" I don't wanna open up my 1700 dollar laptop to break it xD. because I didn't get that 200 dollar warranty of if I break it, they replace it. >__>" And I'm not getting another computer for like 3-4 years probably...
I gave my old desktop away, so no desktop cases to touch. xD

O_O both girls?! Reason why you would be like +5 points is because of the interest in computers... not just the omg I broke it. Yes, you are asking questions too but they just seem more open ended to maybe learn a bit more about computers. Thats why its very non-girl like behavior to make me think must be a dude. O_o
Just checked and I thought I was in heaven... but no...
watermelon avatar isn't very far away, but wayy too young =[
virus girl is just too far, probably too young too..

haha
Okay

can of air. 3 pack from costco $7... I use up a LOT of these.
Your chipset fan shoudl be around here...
IPB Image
Right below the huge heatsink of mine...
IPB Image
That thing.
Depending on your chipset, brand and how old the motherboard is, many also have a southbridge
IPB Image
(Please note... my motherboard doesn't have a chipset fan... it has a chipset heatsink that hopes my CPU fan will be big enough to blow at also. I HATE chipset fans very noisy)
Thats right. You see twisters. I hate the way the video card's fan sounded so I used twisters to tie a normal 80mm fan to my video card. Looks ugly but works. >:o I can't afford too many zalman heatsinks!

watermelon.
Average notebook heatsink.

view from the exhaust where the air blows out of.
IPB Image
(Most MODERN notebooks have a bunch of copper fins in it like an air conditioner. Thats where dust usually collects and when that clogs things overheats)
Hard to get to it?
My notebook specifically (IBM t20)
IPB Image
Take out screws...
pop up keyboard

...
wala

closeup.

See? not all that hard for me... but each notebook is different.
(Please note... I have taken the laptop completely apart about 4 times already... Apart as in took out motherboard... case in many many pieces... screen in another room type apart. I wanted to learn about them so I bought a broken one and rebuilt it)

woooooooooow. I would NEVER take it apart!! What if I miss a piece or drop a piece? Oops, there goes the CPU, oops, I think I stepped on some weird green chip... augh. that would be terriiibbbllle. Knowing how bad I am with electronics, that's a likely scenario. I broke 4 VCR players as a young child. =__=" I stuffed snacks, chips, crumbs, my dad's car key's, tissues, used gum, spaghetti, whatever you name it in there. =_____=" Buuut yeahh. I have an interest in computers because if I don't ask a specific question, then you can't help me. ( I hate it when people ask me for help, but don't specify ) and I want to know what I'm doing to what I'm using. And that thing I'm using is VERY important. =] . plus, it's just intersting to learn xD. I'll view the pics once I get home, freaking library hates image shack, photobucket, ect. =__=" Oh, is there any way to make the fan quieter? my HP pavillion zd8000's fan is SUPER LOUD. louder than my old desktop from 1998.

wait. how do you know my age? O_O"

wink.gif super stalker.
No, its in your profile 1990

You broke vcrs before?!
How odd... I fixed about 3...
>_< its no fun when grandparents bring all these broken things and say hey you can fix it! Those things I have about 50% chance of fixing.

Your fan... well depends.
If its just on all the time and is loud... I can tell you to install speedfan to control the fans.
If its just hot... well... I can tell you to get something like Notebook hardware control or RMclock to adjust the speed step so that it will normally run at a slower speed (like here on soompi... you don't NEED to use all your CPU's power to post here... maybe 1 ghz.
The other thing is of course... the can of air... just spray in the vent and hope the dust goes to another corner of your laptop O_O... eh better than on the fan right?

I'm surprised you asked "how do you know my age" when you put your DOB in your own profile. hahaha

Wow awdark, hey you think you can make me an instructional video of how to take apart the laptop instead of those still pics. I'm just not getting it without moving pictures. laugh.gif Just playin' with ya, man. ph34r.gif

umm... it means your chipset fan is going under 1000rpm or not runnning at all... my pc boots up and says "cpu fan fail.." but thats because it's running off 12V off the psu not the motherboard =D. Asus Probe says "FAN FAIL" because it cant monitor the speed of one of the 3pin fans. strange but oh well.. as long as i can see it's running i dont really care.
