Really? Wow at my school French 4 is HP but people can take the AP exam because French 5 AP and French 4 HP are mixed together .. but wow good luck! I'm sure it's okay though if you've taken at least that many years of French.

My teacher was going on about how one of her students who was in French 4 HP that took the AP exam and got a 5 on it and basically didn't have to take French anymore but she still continued .. I don't know I think you're going to do fine :] It's not as hard as you think LOL

That's a very interesting exam. Hope you do well on it!
I took 2nd year French this year at university. Daaaang, it was SO easy. Mind you, I've been speaking French since I was what, 4 years old? Woo.

The AP French language exam really needs a better curve. Why is it tthat they take off more points for wrong answers than the other ap exams? stupid collegeboard.

I think the essay was a GREAT question.. because I practiced somthing like it before biggrin.gif lol. The hardest part was listening cause I kept telling myself to concentrate so then I couldn't concentrate sleep.gif

I guess language AP isn't popular among Asian people.. hahaha But yeaa it was a good experience :] I LOVE FRENCH hehe My soon to be 3rd fluent language woot woot

^ Haha, same here--my third fluent language (I'm Korean, by the way). I absolutely LOVE the French language, it's really beautiful. I won't be taking AP French until my senior year, but I'm in French III right now. Hopefully I'll be ready. I'm pretty fluent now, but I need to learn one more tense. ^^

So...the AP exam has an oral and written part?

Yes.. its really brutal. Its practically designed for native speakers -.-;

It has 2 main sections. The first section includes reading comp. passages (its the SAT in French.. literally. Like you cant just skim for answers, you have to read the entire passage -.- ) and listening. The listening is difficult cause its not just 2 line exchanges, there are like long dialogues and you need to write notes in order to retain info.. but its hard to write everything. The 2nd section is the essay and the oral. The essay is 40 minutes long and the oral, you do with a tape recorder and no you cannot retape yourself lol.

Yes, my French teacher told me that she no longer wants to teach AP French because the kids in it think it's a slacker class and worry more about AP History, Science, or English classes. AND she told me that the national average for the AP French test was a 2.2. I'm really scared, but I have a couple more years until I can take it. My teacher has already made us do a tape recording-type test, and we are only allowed to speak French in class. Hopefully this will help me on the oral section...I'm scared of the essay and passage reading stuff, though. Is it really, truly that bad?

^ i think it is really that bad which is why i didn't take it even though i'm in french 5 AP right now. but seriously out of all my ap classes i don't take french that seriously because classes like physics, calc, history, english and pretty much everything else is much more important than french. besides my teacher is a huge pain because she is always giving oral assessments and she always compares the fluent french people to the non-fluent french people so while all the fluent french people get As all the non-fluent french people barely get Cs i really hate my french teacher. i remember when i was a junior and my french teacher gave us sample ap questions and we were all like crazy.gif what the heck is happening. the listening was so exteremly difficult.

Ok like X number of students go into a seperate room and start recording. Yes the voices get mixed up cause everyone records at the same time. however you concentrate on what you are saying, not anyone else. You cant copy cause.. well you wont be able to really hear since theres so many people talking at once.

When you playback the tape, you will be able to hear the voices aroudn you lol

Don't be scared so soon! haah prepare yourself biggrin.gif Yes the national average is very very low because it has a sheety system of grading (1/3 off for every wrong as opposed to the other tests which are 1/4 off) and horrible curve.. not very helpful. The reading section personally was difficult for me because the passages are long and you have to read them again and again to understand, which kills a lot of the time. But they are do-able. Its NOT impossible.

Its quite bad indeed. Its not your typical AP test. For other AP tests like Biology and World History, all you have to do is memorize a million facts and bam you can get a 5. But for something like french, it is very comphrensive. Meaning that if you dont have a good foundation in years 1-2, you cannot and will not advance when you study harder tenses. Also it is difficult because there is so much pressure. No other test will put you on the spot. the test gives you around 3 minutes to show to test graders that you have developed profiency and a level of fluency in the language. If you dont get your act together in those 3 minutes, you are doomed. Most of the time people are so nervous they cannot think so it becomes something like "uhh.. je.. uhhhhhhhhhh.." So you spend a lot of time saying "uhh.."

Despite all of this, it is not impossible! There are people who get 4s and 5s, although a lot of them are native. This is why certain colleges even accept 3s like Boston College. They understand it is a difficult test. If you a) love the language or cool.gif have above average skills then by all means, go for it!

It is very hard. I am not kidding. It is harder than other AP tests. Oral, listening, reading, and writing, it's all difficult because your vocabulary and comprehension has to be above average. You need to be memorizing French vocabulary on the side and listening to French videos and CDs. Oral is probably the hardest. They ask the most ridiculous questions and they really test your proficiency. Practice that the most. Remember, if you can't find the word for sth, go around it. If you can't say "J'étudie le français depuis sept ans," say "J'ai étudié le français pour sept ans." Correct yourself, and your mistake won't be counted against you. And yes, it's very distracting to take the oral test while many students are taking it all around you. It's very bad foresight on the part of the test proctors. Try the French SAT. It has similar vocabulary.

To be perfectly honest, it's usually more useful to skip the AP exam and take the placement exam at your college of choice. It's usually just some brief conversational French and maybe a written test, and it's less difficult. The AP test for French is mostly useless if you're continuing in French. If you're not... I guess it gets a language requirement out of the way?

By the way, I loved my AP French class. We had the best time in there because the class was miniscule and the teacher was fun. He basically let us decide the curriculum and we did a lot of class projects, like videos and plays, etc. We read Camus and Molière (le passé simple n'est pas simple!). That was one of my favorite classes senior year. I would recommend if you have a small class or a great teacher.

^ Yes, I have a really great teacher who wants us all to do well in French.

So I'm thinking...yes, I want to continue French during college, so should I just not take the AP exam (even if I'm taking the AP class)? I don't want to risk anything . . . I wonder why they made it so difficult?
