what grade are you in? if you're a junior and you don't know about applying to colleges, that's a big problem. the sooner you have the information, the better your chances are of going where you want to go. basically when you take the sat's, they allow you to send your sat scores to up to 4 colleges. this is not mandatory, but it is nice if you're pretty set on where you want to go, because then you won't have to pay a fee later to have your sat scores sent to the college you're applying to. so if you're unsure of what college you want to go to, just leave the send scores to part blank and if you do know or at least have a clue, then send scores to that college.

colleges have a seperate deadline for SAT/ACT scores, usually between the end of december or early/mid january.

scores take about 2-3 weeks to send so you still have time even if you decide to take them in november

You apply online or request a hard copy of the application from you school of choice. Don't worry about your SAT scores yet. You can send them later. You won't be charged unless it's an additional 4 colleges that you choose.

There really isn't a guide, you'll get the hang of it once you start the application process. Research the schools that you're interested in and visit if you can. I think The Princeton Review and College Board are a good place to start.

When it comes to the application itself, you can get hardcopies of the application from colleges or use their online application. Also, there's the common app so if your school/s that you want to apply to are listed then there's basically a universal application for them with a supplement or not depending on the school.

With your SATs, you can choose not to send in your scores and see what they are first but that means that you'd have to pay like $8 later for every school you want to send your scores to.

Good luck!
