Alright, so I'm being stationed in Japan and I fly off next week. I went to the T-Mobile dealer and they told me that because they use a different frequency in Japan I would have zero service there. Thus I have to cancel my plan.

Now I need a cellphone for the two years I'm going to be there, however I don't want a wasted investment in a phone that won't work outside of Japan.

Are there any phones that are globally compatible?

Edit: Nevermind! I'm a moron.

But I need to know which phones, if any, would work outside of Japan. I'm only being stationed there for two years, I'm thinking of going to the UK for my next tour of duty, and possibly stateside after that... and I don't want to have to get a new phone whenever I relocate.

I highly doubt that there would be a phone that works anywhere and everywhere..... but still, I need to know for sure.

best bet: get a phone while you are in Japan. as for t-mobile, you should be able to get out of your contract if you show them your orders. then just ebay the phone.

Yeah, they told me I can cancel my contract with no penalty... and I'll just give my phone to my uncle since he broke his.

ok. well, since you're gonna be over in Japan for 2 years. Get one a Japanese phone. they are far better than most phones we have here in the USA. phone technology moves so rapidly, by the time your 2 years is up, the original phone you will buy will be quite old and maybe obselete. moral: get a japanese phone. :-)

Hahaha... you know what. I feel silly now. I just realized.... I'll be there for TWO years.

I seemed to have forgotten that I change phones every six months anyway.

Like, OMG....

Helio has international services in their plan, i know that for sure. And I think I saw somewhere in the verizon store that they have international too.

but they probably overcharge for roaming and since the person will be gone for TWO years it's much more economical to just buy a japanese phone, use it for 2 years, and then just get a new phone when he/she comes back.

You can get a lot of really nice phone in Japan for 1 cent.

Trust me, once you use a Japanese cell phone, you'll never want to go back to any other kind of phone again.

in japan there is no such thing as a yearly plan, 2 yr plan.
you pay as you go (and its UBER expensive)
so you could get a fone and then cancel it when you leave.

in the UK they use the 3G network and i think in JP its a diff network...
so sorry you cant get a phone that will work in the UK and JP

buy a dual mode phone, triband gsm/WCDMA, that way when you leave japan you are free to use any service, or vodafone has some GSM phones you could use to.

just get a phone in japan. you're going to be there for 2 years so by the time you leave asia there will be a lot of different phones out there and yours will seem ancient unless you're one of those people who don't really care about technology and just want a phone to make calls on.

Yeah, when I lived in Japan for 2 years, I had an international phone.
But when you go on vacations and trips and such, you're gonna have to get a rent phone.
