Okay... so i've been doing my online research about ivy league schools and what not and what scores you need to get in blah blah blah....

people tell me that i'm only good enough for the community college (no exaggerations... i'm drop dead serious)...

so here is an outline of me

4.5 GPA (if you take AP courses they give you more than the 4.0 gpa)

about 1800 on my first SAT (i'm taking it again and I'm pretty sure i'll get over 2000)

I go to an Art studio every friday and saturday and do hardcore art... i tutor two kids for free on a regular basis... i volunteer at a rehabilitation center for mentally retarded or those who've experienced substance abuse.

I also take viola lessons (but i heard that unless you are extremely good at an instrument then Ivy league colleges don't care if you play in instrument or not) and i've been playing piano for over 10 years consistently...

I mean... my grades are an A average, my counselor keeps telling me I'm a B average because I screwed up freshman year...but sophmore and up till this year i've made straight A's in honors classes.... i don't really see how i'm a B student...

Also i got into a special math and science school that only allows 200 students to attend in the whole state... but because of lack of interest in that field i decided to leave the academy

So am I really merely the "local college" material because I think i could get into an Ivy League school but that's not what others tell me... even my school councelor

You're definitely not community college material -
definitely not. You're a good candidate for an Ivy (your
SAT scores need to be a bit higher), but with your stats,
I can guarantee that you can get into a good university/college,
and somewhere NOT local.

what????, your stats certainly doesn't say that "you are only good enough for community college"

i'm not sure if you are ivy league qualified, but you are certainly up there tongue.gif

maybe you're confusing community college with local college since you seem to be using them interchangeably. community college is two years of further education in which anyone who graduates from high school can go to. however "local colleges" can include anything in your area. if you're in boston then local colleges can include anything from berklee, boston university, boston college, to UMASS Boston. well i definitely don't think you're community college material and anyone who knows anything about college will know that you don't belong in community college. i'd say that you have a chance at ivy leagues but when you apply for colleges you shouldn't only set your sights on ivy leagues because there are plenty of good colleges other than ivy leagues that you can get into easily.

the gpa is def up to standards for ivy
however the sat score...try to pull them up a bit. perhaps if u live in cali u have a very good chance for the UCs...otherwise idk. try to raise ur sat! it's totally possible to raise it to 2200+ through practice

maybe if you had some leadership roles and a some different club activities and another talent outside of aesthetics. because those are pretty much the stats of most of the ppl at my school ( i go to a really good school ) and no ones going to an ivy league.

Okay first of all DON'T LISTEN TO YOUR COLLEGE COUNSELOR! NEVER, EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unless you go to a private school or to a school where the counselor has previously been a admissions officer at a college. DON'T LISTEN TO THEMMM!! They dont know WTF they're doing. They look at the books and just look at your GPA and SAT score and base it soley off of that. They dont know your ECs, how your essay looks, and a bunch of other stuff that influences college decisions. My counselor told me to start looking at CUNYs (community colleges) with a 2000+ SAT (yes, my average sucks but come on Im not retarded - I have an 86. something)! And she recommended me all these schools that have nothing to do with me, she even recommended me a CHRISTIAN SCHOOL! Without even asking me if I was Christian or not. SO my point is , counselors at school dunno crap.

So - your GPA is amazing, you do a decent amount of ECs (nothing spectacular, but good) and your SAT (if you get it over 2000) will be great! so screw your counselor, apply to ivy leagues and top tier colleges! YOU ARE WORTHY smile.gif don't let some dumb counselor make you disappointed. and don't let your peers get to you either. just do your best, work hard and it'll pay off in the end!!!

Just to let you know, colleges usually dont really look at your freshmen year...

I say that your chance is really high.

Let me tell you, my grades + sat score are way worse than yours, and I'm not going to a community college.

You can obviously do better than a community college (and yes, you should figure out if you're really talking about "community colleges" or just universities that happen to be nearby), but you don't have much of a chance at an Ivy with an 1800.

You're definitely not "just community college material". With your stats, you could definitely get into some good schools. You'll have to improve your SAT scores, show off some academic spark, and, like everyone else applying to colleges, hope for a bit of luck for Ivy's.. but I'm sure you can get into some quality schools.

ur SAT scores are kinda low for ivy leagues...but public school im sure u can get into any
someone i know had same GPA as u but SAT scores were 1100 range (old SATS) so equivilent would be 1650? and she got into CAL (UCB)
so i guess public school GPA is really important (SATs dont matter if ur GPA is low) ivy league just raise ur SATs and i think ull be fine

your school also weights GPA for AP/IB classes. our school, or rather our state doesn't. so the highest attainable GPA is a 4.0, regardless of how many AP or IB classes you've taken.

You have decent stats. They won't blow anyone away, but they are good.
You should get into goods schools and you should apply to Ivys if that's where you want to go because you have a chance.
School counselors tend to say stupid things. Ignore them.
