I'm so inlove with Rainie! She is soo cute and adorable! She is a great taiwanese actress not only that she is amazing singer!! Her voice is just so awsome! She is just so talented.
Rainie doesn't like it when people airbrush re-touch and change her pix for magazines especially cuz she likes her beauty mark.

There's a hard-nosed hardworker behind Rainie Yang's girlish smiles. teens meets Taiwan's Priestess of Cuteness.

While other 22-yr old may gripe about all work and no play, Rainie Yang enjoys her too-tight to breathe schedule. She admits because she does not know how to enjoy the concept of leisure. After all, the petite performer has been juggling between singing, acting and hosting since 15, when she was recruited as a member of the now-defunct girl band 4 in Love.

Like when she was involved in a road accident in May. During her two-day medical leave, Rainie reveals during this interview, she did not know what to do. She says, "I spent more than half the time tossing and turning in bed, wondering how should i 'rest'."

Or when she worked through her birthday (4 Jun) by popping into Singapore to plus her latest album, Meeting Love. Instead of taking the opportunity to party away with friends and family, she thinks, "it's great to be able to work on my birthday, because i have no idea how to best spend it. So yes, I'm a workaholic.

Read on for other exciting snippets from her meeting with [B]teens.

teens: Congratulations on the release of Meeting Love! How much easier or tougher was it to make, compared to your debut, Ambiguous?
Rainie: This album was as tough as the first, although the nature of the difficulty was different. On Ambiguous, i was more afraid because i had to learn to understand my voice and my strengths. On Meeting Love, I was more confident so i found the process more fun. But expectations had become higher, especially in terms of how to tap on the 'character' of my voice. For instance, the producer would give instructions such as "Sing as if you're whispering". That had me stumped!

The album contains a couple of musical gems such as the title track and "Celebrate", as well as "I Cannot Find", which you co-wrote. What was your first experience at songwriting like?
It took me only one hour to complete the lyrics, but i spent several days before that listening to the melody, to conceptualise the theme. To get myself into the mood, i recalled many unhappy memories. I didn't feel bad after that though - being able to write down my feelings allowed me to officially close that chapter in my life and move on. I felt relieved.

How would you rate yourself as a lyricist then?
I don't think i'm very good. The lyrics subsequently went through like 20 revisions - i think! I knew i was nervous when i submitted it, but i felt worse for several days after. I desperately wanted to know what the producers thought of it, but i didn't dare ask in case he slammed them. One day, i plucked up courage and asked in a tone as casual as possible, "Oh, by the way, did you receive my lyrics?" The producer actually replied, "It was quite good!"

You're hailed Taiwan's "Priestess of Cuteness". Is that a hassle or a high?
My cute image hasn't restricted my options in singing, acting or hosting. I believe it helped greatly to distinguish me as an artiste, even though it wasn't what i started out as. I also believe my image will evolve over time, so no, i probably won't be as cute as now when i am, say, 32. Anyway, I'm not sure if I'll still be recording then.

Say, you were involved in a road accident in May. What was the first thing that flashed across your mind at that instant?
You, know, when the car was hit, my only thought was how i could make it to the filming studio on time. I did consider calling my mum but i didn't want to worry her unnecessarily so i gave myself some time to calm down first.

So, when did you eventually reach the hospital?
Not after a while! Strangely, i must have been so preoccupied with making my way to the studio, i didn't feel any pain. I simply wrapped my head in a shawl, got off the car, and hailed another cab. By the time my manager got to know about it, i was already halfway through my make-up, and she was screaming for me to get to the hospital. True enough, when i arrived at the hospital, my neck was swollened and inflamed. But I've recovered from the injuries, thank goodness.

Let's move on to a more cheerful topic. Your hairstyle is apparently the most copied in Taiwan right now. How much do you enjoy knowing that?
Very! I don't mind being copied by my fans because i personally like this hairstyle very much. I feel it's perfectly fine to emulate your idol's style because it's part of growing up. In future, when you recall the younger days, the hairstyle will always be a reminder of your aspirations then. I hope the fans won't look back at it in regret - ha ha!

Admit it: Whose hair did you used to copy?
When i was in secondary school, i was a huge fan of Japanese singer Amuro Namie. I grew my hair as long and as straight as hers, and even tried to imitate the way she turned her head, so the hair would look smooth and silky.

How fussy are you when it comes to your tresses?
I'm quite easy-going. I leave it entirely to my hairstylist to do whatever she thinks is suitable for the event. Sometimes, however, i will tell her things like "How about a more natural look today?" I suspect she can read my mind - my instructions are so vague, but she achieves the effect that i desire. Plus, she's a fast worker; she takes just 40 minutes to do my hair.

Finally, what's your 22nd birthday wish?
I want to stay healthy and happy in the year ahead!

It's a Rainie Day

Rainie Yang was recently in Singapore to promote her new album, Meeting Love. Sterling Wong chats with the young starlet and discovers some forbidden truths.

She wears pink alot, has hair that's immaculately curled into winsome locks and is blessed with mesmerising doe eyes that make people go, "Aw". But is this Taiwanese pop princess really a self-confessed cutie-pie?

Well, she may be sing songs with titles such as Cute and Sensitive, but do not(even for a second) expect Rainie Yang to be all dainty and princess-like every minute of the day.

The 22-yr old had just completed an exhausting sing-and-greet sessions with fans when Teenage met her for a spot of mosaic art and craft. She was still raring to go, even though she was visibly fatigue.

But then, we spotted her elaborately manicured, jewel-adorned nails. Oh dear, we thought, what do we do now, since mosaic art and craft involves the use of white glue? It would mean getting her fingers all sticky and dirty.

Instead of shying away from the task at hand(mind the pun) for fear of damaging her nails, Rainie simply shrugged it off, saying, "It's just glue. No big deal. I can always wash my hand afterwards."

Mosaic art and craft is somewhat of a tedious task. You have to stick small bits of tiles piece by piece onto a board. Rainie, however, is not one to be meticulous about such things. "I'm quite a patient person, but for such art and craft, I won't be taking my time worrying about specific designs or details. I believe in spontaneity. Besides, I'm not extremely good with my hands," she laughed.

Following up on the breakout success of her debut solo album My Intuition, Rainie is back with a new project entitled Meeting Love, and by her own profession, sounding cuter than ever.

"The songs in Meeting Love are 'cutesier' than those in My Intuition and I'm more vocally expressive. In various songs, I'll sound cute, happy or sad. It's all very expressive and i use a range of vocals."

Only the handsome need apply
Speaking about 'meeting love', the happily single Rainie affirmed that she knows very clearly the type of guys she is interested in, and they are those who are "tall, dashing, has a good body, is attentive to my needs and constantly seeks improvement."

And guys, if you don't meet her physical requirements, we're afraid there is no compromise. According to Rainie, "most guys I've liked are the sunshine-happy, sporty sort. I've never ever liked guys who are not my type. For some girls, it's like they prefer a certain type, but then, the guys they end up dating with are never within the 'criteria'. But I've always been lucky."

Now, isn't it possible that she might find herself falling in love with a good friend one day who's neither tall nor handsome?

"No way! I'll deifinitely consider a relationship only if he meets the physical requirements first. Of course, if these criteria are met, but he's not a good man, then it's still not ok. But that's the first round," Rainie rationalised.

Sounding bemused at her own stringent criteria, Rainie added, "my friends all say what i really like are clones, because everytime i point out a guy i like to them, they all look about the same!"

Wicked Whispers
Because of Rainie's single status, there have been rumours abound linking her to a host of eligible men, including Shawn Yue and Mike He. With a dsmissive laugh, she says they're all ridiculously unfounded, but she says the most ridiculous yet is the rumour between her and F4 member, Ken Zhu. It sratred when Ken turned away lucrative engagements to appear as special guest at Rainie's concert in Taiwan after she invited him.

"Ken?(Grimacing slightly). The thought of me and him is too gross. No way!" she exclaimed with youthful indignation. "I can't imagine myself with him. He's not my type, and I'm not his either."

Is there anyone she might want to be linked with though? Instinctively, Rainie said no, but added wryly, "Well, maybe Tony Leung. That rumour has never been spread before. Someone, please start it!"

Perfect on the Kawaii meter
One main reason why Rainie has become so popular is her pretty and lovable image. In the Mandarin pop scene, stars like Cyndi Wang, Angela Zhang and Rainie herself have achieved great commercial success, but most have also incurred the wrath of critics and rival fan factions who say their 'cuteness' is a contrivance.

What makes Rainie stand out is the fact that she readily admits that she acts cute. "I've always been upfront about acting cute. I even teach girls how to act cute so their borfriends will like them more. I mean, if people want to accuse me of acting cute, I'm fine, because it's true!" she explained nonchalantly.

"All said and done, I'm not bothered by these criticisms. There're fewer critics than people who like me, so i shouldn't get upset over them right?" elaborated Rainie.

Will the real Rainie please stand up?
So if her cutie-pie is just an act, then who is the real Rainie Yang?

"The real Rainie, well, what you see is what you get. What you see on TV, that's me. The cute factor is part of me, but it's just a small part. Usually, I'm more tomboyish. Blue and black are actually my favourite colours, not pink." Rainie revealed matter-of-factly.

New moves
If Rainie had her way, her next album will see her in a slightly more upbeat direction. That's right - Rainie aims to include dancing in her repertoire.

"Yeah, i hope to dance for the next album. But if i don't get good dance songs, then i won't," she shared. But don't wait for lots of Britney-esque sexy hip thrusting or gyrating. The gymanastic-trained Rainie says that it is not, and won't be, her style.

"I want to do energetic, funky dance moves, but I'm not going to deliberately try to be sexy. That's just not me!" she joked.

"I aspire to be like Namie Amuro or BoA. Their dance moves are not overly suggestive but it still feels so sexy. You shouldn't have to try too hard!"

Those are some tough shoes to fill but given the meteoric way Rainie has risen to the top of the music scene, we say Namie and BoA had better watch their backs!
