Hey guys,

I am leaking coolant from either the gaskets of my water pump or directly from a ruptured pump. Either way, i'm going to take my car into the shop to get it fixed (i hear this is too complicated for a Do-It-Yourself). Anyways, I'm just trying to avoid getting scammed so i'm wondering how much i should be expecting to pay. I drive a 91 nissan 240sx.

How much does it usually cost to get new gaskets installed?
If my pump is toast, then how much does it usually cost to get a new pump?

Thanks.

the gaskets and pump shouldn't set you back more than $100-ish[give or take about $20] (that's CDN price)..and that's OEM Nissan pump...so you could probably get it for cheaper at Crappy Tire by going with an OEM replacement pump.
the gaskets alone are a few dollars..probably like 3 or 4 dollars laugh.gif

if your gaskets are going and the pump is used...i advise just replacing both the gaskets and the pump. there's no real point in putting in a new gasket, and have the pump fail later and have to buy the pump and gaskets again...you'll basically pay twice for the labour if that happens..and labour OWNS!

as for the labour...it shouldn't take a competent mechanic more than 1-2hours (and that's a generous estimate considering a DYI job doesn't take much longer...even when EVERYTHING goes wrong).

my guestimate..
200-300 after everything.

it probably leaking from the weep hole in the water pump. even if it is the gasket get a new pump anyways, yours is old and will probably fail soon.

you can get the pump for like $60, add a couple hours of labor...probably like $200-300 like some-azn-guy said

So yea, i just got my water pump replaced. Took it to a Nissan dealership to get it done (probably a big mistake). Anyways, it costed roughly $350 for labor and like $87 for the parts. After taxes, things came out to be like $450 (CDN dollars).

I guess i overpaid but my car feels like mint again and there's good warranty on the work so... anyways, thanks for the help guys.

How long would it take for a water pump to die anyways?

My camry has been leaking about 8 ounces of coolant a week from somewhere around the water pump. Seems to still work just leaks a lot. =\ It has leaked like that for about a year maybe more.

whoa, that's a lot of $ for labour. what's the going rate at that dealership? 100+ an hour? huh.gif
well, at least you got it fixed right?

i would highly advise you to replace it ASAP. if your waterpump fails, you can pretty much kiss your engine goodbye because that's where it will end up..in car engine heaven(or hell).

i know a guy who had a leaky pump on his Impreza RS. he knew about it for a while, likely almost a year; but was too damn lazy to fix it. his engine ended up becoming an engine with a fried headgasket. i just find it funny, how he used to complain that the waterpump was too expensive of a fix and now he needs a new engine laugh.gif

take care of issues when they're small, otherwise; you'll just get owned to a higher degree in the end.

Dealerships have a reputation of charging an arm and a leg but i guess they offer a peace of mind since they are licensed Nissan specialists. I probably should've taken my car to Joe's Autoshop at the local street corner to save a few bucks But oh well... at least it's fixed.

Totally agree.

When my coolant first began leaking about 8 months ago, i didn't think much of it. I was too lazy to fix it. It got a little frustrating but all i had to do was refill my coolant on a weekly basis so that's all i did. Then, as the months passed by, weekly refills turned into daily refills which eventually turned into constant refills. Finally one day, refilling did nothing and that's when i knew my pump was done. During the past few weeks, i noticed my engine was starting up funny. It didn't idle smooth when it started up and i couldn't give gas during warmup. It felt like the engine overheated or something. The engine would routinely die on start up as well.

So my situation turned critical before i finally got off my lazy ass to fix the pump. It's been a couple days since i fixed it and my engine is starting remarkably well again. No more coolant leaks and no more constant refills. My car runs like new. I can't imagine what would've happened to the engine had i not fixed it.
