Basically they want me to revamp the entire site, design, and content. Ill be meeting with them this monday. My question is, im only a Grade 12 student, however ive taken grade 11 and 12 courses on website and graphic design. I can make above average and often exceptional webpage designs. But because im not a professional i can only charge so much.
SO my question is how much should i charge by the hour? Im in Canada and the minimum wage is like 8$ give or take.

I'm also an indendent webdesigner. As a rule of thumb, start with maybe 400-500, assuming you're only doing a couple of graphics and some basic HTML. Depending on your skills and how much content your client wants, you can charge more than that. If your client wants more fancy things like Flash or PHP/MySQL/ASP/Java programming, you can charge much more in the $1000+ range.
That's excluding hosting and domain name.

Heres what will entail.
Creating a design layout in Macromedia fireworks, then placing it in dreamweaver, adding pictures, some flash, banner designs, content, and of course CSS and other site necessities. I think there will be about 8-12 pages.
dtemplar, is that 400-500 dollars american or canadian?

I'm not sure charging by the hour is a good idea, unless you're actuallly an employee of that company. This being said I'm assuming you're doing this as a contract job.
From what you said, 400-500 sounds about fair. Of course I've never seen your previous work before so if it looks really good or if you have proven experience then you can charge slightly more. For example, I did a site for a medium size business with some graphics, took my own pictures, 20+ or so pages, built a relatively simple database with MySQL and some supporting PHP, and I charge 1200.
Ayu, yes they pay you that amount PLUS web hosting and domain registration which is paid to the respective companies. 400-500 is what you take home.

$8 = way too little. even if your experience is not that great it's still little for web design.

With something like this...you don't charge in head first. Plan out the project, determine the scope of work, and above all...get a good contract for the project. If you don't...they'll be able to pull strings on you, and you'll be regretting that. Trust me...been down that road.

Im getting a job as a webdesigner for a company out in North Vancouver.
Basically they want me to revamp the entire site, design, and content. Ill be meeting with them this monday. You have some training and obviously they view you as a skilled worker so I'd say in the $10-$12/hr range is good. Per hour is definitely the way to go. You see how long it takes and you report the hours you worked later. I charge $9/hr for my services but that's because minimum wage is freakin $5.25/hr.
BY THE WAY, how did you land that job? Do you have a friend in the company or something? I'd love to start doing my job at a more corporate level.

It really depends on how many pages they want you to do, what they want on it, how long it'll take, the programs you use to do it.
