how does fort minor get classified into alt rock? ... if anything it'd be alt hip hop and that's pushing it.

What exactly is alt rock in your opinion? But anyhow, here's a few
Funeral for Friend: I really like 'Hours'
Kasabian
Bloc Party
Nine Black Alps? maybe...
And I'm trying out:
Hey Mercedes
Thursday
30 Seconds to Mars: I think someone else recommended them also
The Editors, and Oasis: I think they're more brit-punk/pop?

i think alternative is something that doesn't fit in with the major genres like rock and pop. its bascially something that is unusual, but not as unusual to be classifed as, say experimental music or anything.
i agree, its very difficult to classify music these days as sub-genres seem to be growing rapidly by the generation. but my overall opinion is music that does not fit specific categories, therefore creating a category of its own. a little confusing, but that what i reckon alternative is.
