Yeah its good to cross train in striking so as to be better able to counter and close in the range.
you could always be like Inoki when he fought Ali dude just went to his back and upkicked.
I mean being a bjj guy and being pretty comfortable on my back im pretty sure i can tire him out and catch him with out getting KTFO'd.
You also see people shooting in for a takedown against strikers alot in mma and if it happens at the pro level im pretty sure it can happen in a street fight. I would say at my level of BJJ i have enough confidence that i could win in a fight against your average person and your run of the mill karate, kung fu, or taekwondo guy.
Not to be cocky i think grapplers have an edge its alot easier to take some one down than it is to knock some one out.
their is a reason why alot of fights even those in pro venues go to the ground and a grappler submits his opponent or it goes to a decision.
But its best to cross train.

I really miss it and it was fun learning defensive techniques while learning about the japanese culture.
Would I ever use it in the real world? Probably not. I can always use pepper spray. I always thought Aikido was more artsy and formal. Watching people practice in their hakamas always made them look elegant and harmonious (:

Then Tae Kwon Do in high school up to now...
Doing this stuff made me a little self-conscious during practice and sparring sessions
because I was the only female... I always get noticed...
So I had to go against guys twice my size during sparring...
Result? Bruises... Lots and lots of bruises...
But I love doing this stuff...
Anyhow, I'm curious, you guys have talked about Aikido, Grappling, Jujitsu, Judo, etc...
Have you ever guys heard of street-fighting called Arnis?

All that glitters is not gold and all who wander are not lost.
Seriously Vovinam/Viet Vao Do is straight but i have not seen a good school that trains alive other than point sparring and something that looks like olympic TKD sparring with punches. I have to admit they have some quality control as they are better than 95% of the TKD and Karate schools in the states.

Waaa! Glad to have found a fellow Filipino here~
I'm just curious whether Arnis has been able to penetrate other countries
aside from the Philippines...
It's a really realistic and practical martial arts suited for the
real world.
