Sorry about the late response.I live in Georgia alot of MMA fights happen here, but you either need to be 18 or older or need to pay $100+ dollars to get into a league. I'm probably gonna go for the league later this year. Im trying to gain some weight i currently weight in at 122lbs, but i wanna try to get to 130lbs. My original weight was 150lbs and if you look at me it won't even look close to it. ph34r.gif

WOW, you weigh 122? I didn't even know there was an MMA weight class for you that far down. I dropped down to 155 to see if I could, just in case I ever wanted to fight, but now I'm stuck at this weight. At this rate I can probably make 145 featherweight, and I'm 5'11! Anyway, good luck to you on gaining weight and getting into a fight league. If you're ever in VA you should let me know, I'll spar with you. I'm more of a boxing/stand-up type fighter with good sub defense - although I'm rusty now.

The league i`m in puts me against people that have the sameish height, weight, and skill. They match me against people in the league/dojo around the state and we fight once at the every season. I`m rusty at stand up since I have been training my Jiu Jitsu/Judo alot more often.

I've had my mind set on joining a martial arts school for the longest...it's just that around my area, my choices are so limited dry.gif
There's just like..a karate school on every corner and that's it. Haha, i really can't decide which style to do, but then again it doesn't matter much since like i said, there's not many schools to choose from.

There's one Kung Fu temple...checked it out, but i'm still not sure. I just REALLY want to find one soon, get in shape, meet new people. And really to learn the technique..i'd take it quite seriously, lol. (feel like a dweeb), but martial arts is just too cool!

I love martial arts (: Its a nice experience for everyone.
I took aikido for about two years and learned a lot more then self defense; morals, history , culture and what not. and it feels nice wearing the uniform and the hakama.

Hi guys, I didn't even realize there was an MMA related thread at soompi.

Anyway, I've been doin bjj and boxing for a while and recently have taken up muay thai. I weigh 155 and fight at 145. (I know I'm a skinny guy). Anyway, I hope to bulk up to 165 and fight for a local org, the FCFF soon (thefcff.com check it out!).

Good to meet everyone and wish me luck!

Never to old to start martial arts i recommend judo for functionality take downs, ground work its all there except alot of striking but most people dont want callouses on there knuckles.
May God have mercy upon my enemies, because i wont.

BJJ groundwork is light years ahead of judo. I'd recommend BJJ over judo unless it was judo with an emphasis on newaza.

Wouldn't say that but BJJ is almost all (not so familiar with BJJ) about groundwork(joint locks and chokes) so maby its little bit ahead of judo because in judo you do more than just that. And BJJ is based on Judo. And Judos newazas are powerfull as u can see in this video Judo. When you start to compete it is pretty much about newazas and of course take downs.

BJJ has evolved significantly in the art of submission wrestling.
Judo (like TKD) has become more of a sport about throwing with submissions thrown in as an after thought.

Watch tournaments like the ADCC where top level BJJ, Judo, Wrestling, Sambo guys compete. It is dominated by BJJ practictioners.
So I don't think "light years" is much of an exaggeration.

I'm not talking crap about judo. Judo is effective in its applicable form as displayed by Karo Parisyan in his fights. smile.gif

I didnt think that you would bash judo but that ADCC would be same as if you would say "who would win if Karateka and krav magyar would meet in the street" When I talk about street it means same as "only chokes, joint locks etc " what they do in ADCC. Of cource krav maga owns karate in the streets. Dunno when they do it in the ring with rules. But yeah its pretty natural to say that bjj is better on the ground because it really is all about groundwork and judo is more than just that.

I'd say Judo and BJJ are both excellent for groundwork. While judokas may not necessarily be good enough to WIN the world's premier submission tournament regularly, they're definitely competitive (side note - Sanae Kikuta won it before). Besides, that's comparing two completely different things. A BJJ guy would get mauled in a Judo or Sambo tournament too. Remember the great Rickson Gracie vs. Ron Tripp? I don't care what Rickson says, a loss is a loss.

Yeah I wasn't trying to compare BJJ and Judo, it just came out wrong. Learn both I guess and kick some ass.

Well their are threads about the hand to hand combat of martial arts, but none on the weapons of it. I know how to use the nunchukes i`m self taught and i have been swinging for about a month and a half. I`m focusing on the show form of swinging rather then the offensive/defensive form. So what kind of weapons do you guys know or want to know, and how do you feel about your certain style.

Here are some vids
