i believe apple purposely constructed it so that just a few months after your warranty expires, your ipod spontaneously screws up forever, but will display a random icon to give you a false sense of hope that you can fix it through one of the many futile recovery methods on the ipod site.

anyway, my ipod has this folder icon....which supposedly means the software is wrong or watever. all i did was charge it. now my computer doesn't even recognize it.

does any1 know any other options i can do to fix it? without having to purchase a new one? any1 hear about the harddrives that toshiba offer?

this happend to my friend and she called in (the store where she bought it). they WILL NOT help u out, all they will say is that either u ship it in to get fix (cost a lot) or buy a new ipod.

Ipods seriously suck. my ipod kept working and not working. their customer service sucks too. i suggest you get a mp3 player. they work really good & its cheaper. smile.gif

I have mine more than a year and a half.. sometimes it freezes but theres a trick where you do and unfreeze it (well not really a trick -- you press the menu button for a few sec. and then the center button and it'll work again) also, when i charge, and take it out, it'd say there's no batteries, and lastlyyy it doesn't put my songs in order anymore.. but i haven't experience what youve experienced.. maybe just not yet

You should read up on the ipod forums at the apple site and check out their suggestions

Or you could try it on a different computer and run the updater again, but click on "restore" to wipe your pod clean and start fresh. (I'd only do this as a last resort")

And really, when you want to remove it from your PC, make sure you do it properly and not just pull it out, that makes things worse over time.

Yeahh. I got that stupid folder icon, too. And it took FOREVER for it to fully load. And when it did, it usually has NO power left so I have no other choice but to charge it.

If I turn it on the usual way and if it freezes or lags, I press all the buttons randomly and it works. >_> It's not good for the iPod.. but hey. It works.

After that, I charge it.

And then I turn it on and it works fine.

But when I turn it off, I put the 'hold' button in place. And I turn the 'hold' off when I want to use it again.

They probably did. I had problems with my ipod after the warranty expired. I started getting folder icons. Apple doesn't even tell you what it is, just tells you how to fix it for like 9 seconds. Just sell it before anything major happens and save up for something else. I hear Irivers are good and Creative Zens.

It's better if you post this in the Tech section, since the experts lurk there.

i had that happen 2 weeks before my warranty expired x]

meanwhile , just take it to the store and get it fixed . it won't cost that much . don't go playing around with obscure software and so on , just get it done properly first time round .

Just a quick kind of off topic question, but I'm getting rid of my ipod and was wondering if the samsung mp3 players were any good? The ones that look kind of like ipods but with a square touch pad. Anyone try these?

apple is whack in terms of music players...only thing good about them are their computers.

apple uses old technology that other companies already have put on their players, but they dont have the advertising power of apple.

I had mine for about three months now.
It has poor battery life and it freezed a couple of times.
I hope it doesn't screw up after warrenty.
Then I'll be totally sad and never trust apple again.

Mine's been going on for a year+. The warranty is a year. It's still going good, but the battery life runs out so quickly =[
