You might have a CD writer/DVD Reader combo drive instead of an actual CD/DVD Writer. If you know the brand and model of your CD/DVD drive then we can confirm 100% whether it can burn DVDs or only read them.

Or, if it's not a Reader problem, maybe she's using the DVD-R on a DVD+R writer?

they don't normally come with it... it's usually like an $80 upgrade option. Like I said, give us the brand and model of the CD/DVD drive and I can tell you what it is.

darkviet is right. i just read your dell inspiron 600m on cnet reviews and in the specs it states it doesnt have a dvd writer, but a cdrw/dvd rom combo. you can burn cd-rs but not dvd-recordables.
