*idk if this can go in here so feel free to move if need be

Ok..

im almost finished with junior year smile.gif and next year will be my senior year.

Though this is early, i was wondering what kind of things to bring to college for food since ya know, its important, lol.

I've heard only a handful of people say to bring those mini fridges..should i?

Also, am i allowed to bring things like those small electric grills? (ex. george forman grill type grills) Because dorms are usually small and dont have any type of kitchen area. I also want to try to prevent myself from eating all the junk that college students are infamous for eating, such as ramen, chips, etc.

thanks w00t.gif

Depends on where you'll be staying. Some of the bigger places will have all the basic kitchen needs covered. However the smaller dorms will not have those type of luxuries and generally you won't have much space for it. You'll have to ask your school if it's ok to use those type of things too just in case you don't break any fire safety rules or you just have to be extra careful to not get caught.

Most school's provide a list of what you'll need when you go there as well as what's provided.

yeah, depends on how your dorm set up is. like the person above said, some dorms have a kitchen area with fridge where you & ur suite mates or dorm floor can use. if not, i think it would be a good idea to get ur own mini fridge. thats what i did. you can also bring ur own microwave if they dont have a kitchen. as for the grill, i doubt ur allowed to bring & use those in ur dorm room, but again, it depends on ur dorm & college rules.

Definitely bring your own minifridge. I often stock up on beverages because my college overcharges like crazy.

Be careful if you decide to bring a microwave. I brought mine so that both my roommate and I could use it but we got caught when the RAs were inspecting the rooms. Needless to say, microwaves are a fire hazard and I ended up getting a verbal warning.

Bringing a small refrigerator is a great idea, but you should speak to your roommate before going ahead and purchasing one. You'd also need a microwave, so make sure to add that on the list. Maybe you can buy one and your roommate can buy the other.

As for avoiding the typical unhealthy foods that college students generally eat, it really depends on whether or not you'll have a kitchen or kitchen area in your dorm room. For most freshman dorms, anything that can ignite fire (such as a grill or a George Foreman) are banned from dormitories for safety issues. It'd be best if you don't go ahead and purchase that until you know your dorm's policy. But otherwise, you're pretty much stuck with these unhealthy foods. Just hope that your cafeteria serves healthy food. If I were you, I'd try to find a dorm building with a kitchen for freshmens. That way you can purchase your own grocery and cook food on your own, which are usually healthier.

yeah, i'd definitely recommend a mini-fridge too. my roommate and i didn't get one until about 2 months ago (cause we got one for free from our RA), but they're pretty damn handy to have around.

most schools probably won't let you have stuff like grills or rice cookers or microwaves in dorms because they're fire hazards (some schools allow micro-fridges, which are microwaves attached to a refridgerator). tons of ppl burn popcorn here and set off fire alarms.

you really don't need to worry about the freshman 15 if you eat normal amounts and walk to class. in my first quarter at school, i gained a ton of weight. probably about 20 pounds, but now, i've lost more weight than i've gained because i stopped eating so much.

hrmm my room came with a microfridge and microwave...you should talk to your roommate first. and be sure one person buys one item, and the other buys another cuz what're you going to do with it at the end of the year? chop it in half? lol.
i wouldn't recommend the whole bringing grills, etc. the fire alarms are quite sensitive...at least they were for my school tongue.gif
don't worry about freshmen 15 :] i actually lost weight but i always always walk to class :]

as people have said, it all depends on your school and dorm! you can also call your school and ask about it.

they also might provide micro-fridges at a cost (here it was 85$ for the year) you have to take care of it though. a lot of people's freezer's need to be defrosted XD

however, don't worry too much about it : )! you'll be fine : )!

Definitely bring the mini-fridge, and I'd bring the grill, too. They're "illegal" in some dorms, but most don't care enough to check.

one person brings the fridge, the other brings the tv.
technically, you're not supposed to bring electric grills like G.F. and microwaves, but its perfectly fine to have it as long as the RA does not see it. If he/she is a chill dude, he wont say anything.
I brought a mini deep fryer where I cooked everything...i mean everything....ramyun, waffles, burgers, fries...you name it, i cooked it. The whole hallway smelled like the ktichen at Applebees. Once I start cookin, all the fellas be lining up outside my door like they lookin to reserve a spot in my room. Basically, you can bring anything you want, if you're not supposed to, just dont let the RA see it. oh yeah, you're not gonna gain 15 lbs if you just eat normally...some of my friends actually lost couple of pounds since the food in my univ. is so nasty.
