i was wondering if this was because the computer is new or if something is not right....
i hoped things would run faster and stuff but apparently its not and its making me angry
can someone tell me if there is any way make it faster or if this is normal? i dont like to think i spent 1500 on a brand new comp to have it be weird

Maybe you should go back to where you bought it, and ask them..
usually new fresh comps are fast.. of course

In which case, lets find out HOW MUCH RAM the laptop came with.

But yea how much RAM and what type of RAM is a good place to start. As well as what programs are being loaded at startup and services running. Most pre-built computer come with lots of pre-installed stuff (like Range mentioned)

^ i think i have a 512..
well when i bought it yesterday the saleswoman offered to install spysubtract/norton stuff. maybe that could be the problem?
i'm not sure about overheating...i just turned on the computer..
open up the Task Manager and see what programs are running that you don't need. You should uninstall all that bloatware you don't need (i.e Trial subscriptions, questional programs, etc)

There are TONS of demos and trials that come with it.
Uninstall them. Cause they're all set to load when you start up your computer.
That's probably why its so slow.

4200 vs 5400 is a big change and 4200 to 7200 rpm is like 33% increase or something insane like that.
I want 7200RPM

For advanced users... find a defrag program (Windows defrag cannot do this) that can relocate your permanent swap file and the Windows folder so that it resides at the outer edge of the hard drive. For each complete hard drive rotation (RPM), more data is read in the same amount of time on the outer edge versus the inner edge of a hard drive. It's cuz the data is more tightly packed (denser) on the outer edges. Doing that alone will increase your loading times by up to 30% or more.
I will apologise right now though... I'm a lazy bastard. So others will have to jump in to assist if you have questions on how to do any of the above. Or Google it!

also uninstall click to dvd stuff, that's junk.
vaio...list which other ones are there.
you could also uninstall the photoshop cause that version does nothing lol.
Paint does the same things.
I'm not sure that these will help your comp load faster though.
When you start up, look at all the icons in the system tray.
THOSE are the ones you need to uninstall or disable auto-loading.
