okay so yesterday i bought a brand new sony vaio laptop (fj series..) and when i first turned it on, it took a long time to start..

i was wondering if this was because the computer is new or if something is not right....
i hoped things would run faster and stuff but apparently its not and its making me angry

can someone tell me if there is any way make it faster or if this is normal? i dont like to think i spent 1500 on a brand new comp to have it be weird

did it come with any extra or included software for security?
like norton or something?

Maybe you should go back to where you bought it, and ask them..
usually new fresh comps are fast.. of course

Poor ventilation or overheating will cause it to lower it's clockspeed (or throttle itself). Power save mode also does similar things if I remember correctly.

Perhaps we should assume for the best nevets1219. Assume it isn't overheating and is running fine.

In which case, lets find out HOW MUCH RAM the laptop came with.

I guess I always think about overheating...must be the summer heat tongue.gif

But yea how much RAM and what type of RAM is a good place to start. As well as what programs are being loaded at startup and services running. Most pre-built computer come with lots of pre-installed stuff (like Range mentioned)

open up the Task Manager and see what programs are running that you don't need. You should uninstall all that bloatware you don't need (i.e Trial subscriptions, questional programs, etc)

I have a vaio laptop too.
There are TONS of demos and trials that come with it.
Uninstall them. Cause they're all set to load when you start up your computer.
That's probably why its so slow.

I'd say the hard drive causes the most problems in speed on laptops, my gateway takes forever to start up (Pentium M 2.0GHz 1GB DD2-4200 Mobility X700, and 80GB 5400RPM ATA-6 drive.... )

4200 vs 5400 is a big change and 4200 to 7200 rpm is like 33% increase or something insane like that.

I want 7200RPM
I am the minority here.

unload all those crap they put on your laptop to prevent them from auto-loading everytime you turn it on. Turn off System Restore. Disable the Recycle Bin. Turn off Error Reporting. Turn off Automatic Windows Updating. Turn off remote assistance. Use a permanent swapfile instead of a resizable, temporary one.

For advanced users... find a defrag program (Windows defrag cannot do this) that can relocate your permanent swap file and the Windows folder so that it resides at the outer edge of the hard drive. For each complete hard drive rotation (RPM), more data is read in the same amount of time on the outer edge versus the inner edge of a hard drive. It's cuz the data is more tightly packed (denser) on the outer edges. Doing that alone will increase your loading times by up to 30% or more.

I will apologise right now though... I'm a lazy bastard. So others will have to jump in to assist if you have questions on how to do any of the above. Or Google it! biggrin.gif

You can uninstall business contact manager cause I'm betting that the outlook you have on your comp is also on trial and will become useless when the trial expires.
also uninstall click to dvd stuff, that's junk.
vaio...list which other ones are there.
you could also uninstall the photoshop cause that version does nothing lol.
Paint does the same things.
I'm not sure that these will help your comp load faster though.
When you start up, look at all the icons in the system tray.
THOSE are the ones you need to uninstall or disable auto-loading.

let me serenade your soul.
