i had it for the first time today.. i hate the smell but i thought maybe the taste would compensate..
not true, i don't like it AT ALL.

FanFan: Where are you from? =]
maybe you should try making this..

Durian Ice Cream

Serves 6

4 or 5 segments fresh or frozen durian
250 ml/8 fl oz/1 cup milk
250 ml/8 fl oz/1 cup cream
2 egg yolks
125 g/4 oz/1/2 cup sugar

If using frozen durian, thaw completely.
Remove seeds and press flesh through a nylon sieve to eliminate the fine fibres.

Heat milk and cream in a heavy enamel or other non-aluminium pan, stirring until almost boiling.
Whisk egg yolks with sugar until light, stir in a ladleful of the hot milk mixture and return to saucepan.
Stir over very low heat until custard thickens, taking care not to let it boil or it will curdle.
Cool the custard and chill it well, then add a little at a time to the durian pulp,
combining it thoroughly before adding more custard.
This keeps the texture even.

Freeze in a churn or in a shallow glass dish.
If using still-freezing method, stir 2 or 3 times during freezing to enhance smoothness.
Or, after it has frozen, break into pieces and purée in food processor until smooth but not melted.
Return to freezer until firm.
Press freezer wrap directly on surface of ice cream to prevent ice crystals forming.
It is advisable to store durian ice cream in a freezer container with a well-fitting lid.

i live in australia. i had never even heard of durian before a couple of my friends from s'pore and malaysia raved about it.
does the ice cream make it taste nicer? x)

its nice to eat durian once in a while, but not to be eaten excessively as it is quite "heaty"... some nice durian foods that i find not bad are durian puffs(instead of cream puff its durian filling), durian ice cream and also durian chendol(coconut milk + coconut sugar + shaved ice dessert) with durian cream as topping

oh! there's a lot of durian here at the southern part of my country (philippines), especially in Davao. It smells really odd that I heard you can't bring Durian inside the plane. LOL. I haven't tasted the fruit itself but I always get to eat Durian candies whenever my mom travels to Davao.

its probably due to many people who cannot stand the smell of this controversial fruit. but even for a passive durian lover like me i certainly do not want to smell it everywhere! because it has a very strong smell and it is very hard to get rid of the smell once it has infused into places without good ventilation
