I've been hearing a lot of people lately blame coaches for the performance of his/her team, be it bad performances or excellent performances. I just don't get it.

Could someone explain to me how much the coach has to do with game time and how well players perform? I'm not saying that coaches ABSOLUTELY CAN'T have anything to do with it. That is why I'm posting this topic. I would like to knoe exactly how they affect competitors.

Thanks!

They help the players and design the plays.

They choose who plays on the field, court, ice, etc.

Coaches make the team strategies. When you see an athlete with low skill level playing during a game, and the coach decides to keep him on, and the team loses then you blame the coach for not switching in a better player.

Watch Coach Carter, you'll see how a coach BENEFITS a team.

did you catch the match between the Czech Republic and the USA? cos if u did, there goes the answer to your question. Notice how the USA coach looked soooooo disinterested and bored through the entire game even though his team was getting thrashed? it's like he expected them to play badly and doesn't care if they play badly. i mean it's ok to lose but don't go down without a good fight - that should be the mentality of a good coach who has the responsibilty to transfer and reinforce such spirit in his team. if a leader (coach) doesn't even have a mentality whereby he bothers how good a fight his team puts up, why should his team have much of a motivation to fight good?

Besides the foundations of plays/player position/substitution, the coaching team has a huge impact on morale of the players.

the respect hiddink had from the korean players in 2002 was one reason why they were so successful

a good team needs good players who can work together but also a good coach. I mean look at korea with Hiddink in 2002 and now with Australia. A good coach is definitely a big part of it...... as long as the players have the right "attitude"
I mean, if you look at Holland. We have a few players that think they are all that and don't really work together as a team during the match....... a team won't get very far like that even if they have a good coach. thankfully Holland has improved a lot with this, though it could be better.

They also take their time to observe the teams they are going to play with in the future. This is mostly the Assistant Coach job though. Coaches set the formation, and the substituions, and motivate the players to do better. There is a lot more though, but looks like some people already answered your question.

well, bruce arena has been around for so long, i think he's used to seeing his team lose. anyways, i think they (USA) need a change in coaches because he's been the US coach for at least 3 world cups and it's about time to realize he hasn't taken the team past the pool round. but yeah- usually, a coach has a drastic effect on a team. my senior year of high school, we had a losing season until we switched coaches. i mean our first coach- all he did was make us run run and run some more. to him, fitness was everything. some seniors and i went to the head of our high school and she made some phone calls and changed the coach. i mean the new guy was so supportive and such spirit- and this guy knew how to coach. after the change, we wont all but 1 of our games and that was our last game at the conference tournament finals. yeah, we wouldnt have made it that far if it werent for our coach.
