my external hd stopped working. it says:
F:\ is not accessible
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.
any tips on fixing this?

My extension often gives me this (with certain HDs). Sometimes, I think it's lose connection but it only happens with those specific HDs so it's something in the HDs. Not necessary a bad sector but just some errors on the HDs. I would recommend you to chkdsk it with full options when you do get it to work. I don't think the jumpers matter too much in this case but try that as well. There are also hardware resets you can look into for individual extensions. Obviously loose cables is something we already checked but it couldn't hurt to check again.
