Today, I checked my grades... C+, C, and D..
Physics 203, Physics 201 (repeated for the D last qtr), and Math 208 (calc 3)

Which means that my total GPA is now down to 2.997 or something stupid.

tongue2.gif

Any input other than I should study more because studying or the process to begin studying obviously isn't working well for me.

mellow.gif Studying bores me and I can read a chapter half a dozen times without any gain. Any ideas how to fix?
Im honestly beginning to think my brain no longer works anymore.

woah that sucks
yea studying is quite tedious.

Why not get a study group so that you can work out physic/math problems with? that way you and your groups can benefit from each other.

Or better yet, go to tutoring or to your professor office hours and ask for help

Not meaning to nag or anything but studying doesn't mean just passively reading. You can try taking notes, highlighting, whatever works for you when studying notes and the textbook. Try study groups and ask your prof during their office hours for help. Be careful with who you choose to study with though. Studying with friends usually ends up in mostly chatter but if you have friends who can concentrate on the task, go for it.

ta's are quite useful... the only thing i hate about it is they have certain hours you have to match with. They only have like 1-2 hours a week available. Sometimes it's always so packed too so you never get to ask the questions you want and it just becomes another discussion section and not personalized help like it supposed to be.

Well, it seems that passive reading is all I accomplish anyways... even when I sit in the library.

We don't typically have TAs and if we do, they are usually there just to grade papers for the stupid prof. =\

Oh, I know that problem all too well. Twice for two major exams at the end of this past term, I thought to myself, "Oh heh, why don't I study with my friend?" We ended up blowing off studying and just chatting the entire time (even getting Chinese food delivered to the library and eating it in a secluded corner of the mezzanine, lol).

Like someone mentioned earlier.. taking notes, highlighting passages, rewriting notes, locking yourself in the library.. whatever. I don't want to say you have to force yourself to study, but maybe that is what you actually need. That and maybe some motivation to study.

^ Then I suggest you get a tutor. My university offers free tutoring services through their REACH program. I have yet to use one but I have heard many great thing about the program.

If studying isn't working for you then you are going to have to find a better way of studying or you're going to have to change majors.

If you want better grades you have to work for them.

I think you should go with the tutoring thing...I know you don't talk to people, but maybe you can handle a one on one lesson.

if i start losing interest in the material, then i'll read it out loud like i'm giving a speech (i'll impersonate my prof or someone with a british accent; whateever will make it fun) or reading to a child. this way, i can change the tone as i read along and it makes it interesting to me. i dont know this would help you. i know only 2 other people who do this as well and it really does help them.

Flashcards!

Rewrite your notes on a chalkboard/blackboard.
Please don't forget me. { I'm going away. }
I'm taking a taxi to Kentucky where they don't even know all about me. I just need to feel s a f e.
I've got a thousand sweaters, and shoes, and paintings to hide the skeletons in my way.
But he said, "Slow down, slow down. Think it over, we've all got wretched closets, but silly girl pride kills more than Aids lately."
I said, "Come on, I thought it over. I don't wanna die here. I have no desire to get m♥rried."

since u know your study habit isnt working, why not try a diff kind of study habit? u wont gain anything by just reading passively (for most cases). like others mentioned, take notes, highlight, hardcore memorization, whatever..

me too. no suggestions for u.
-i got a D in art history, can't even retake it now cuz the school i transferred to doesn't offer it. there were literally 100+ statues of buddha that were very similar, n they kept asking for the name, date, and artist.
-i just retook bio this semester cuz i got a C last semester, and i got a C AGAIN!!! then my advisor suggested me to raise my gpa by retaking it next semester, but i'm not.
-i got an A in calc the first time, retook it cuz the credit was no good n got a C. so now i'm retaking it AGAIN to get a better grade.

finding it really hard to be studious. i know if i studied more i would have gotten better grades, but i just never start...
n i feel so badly cuz it's really a waste of money n time to keep retaking classes cuz i don't try the first or second time around.

Learn to love to expand your knowledge. Gotta learn till you die right?, so might as well start now.

The things that I prepared for MCAT (an excellent example of studying)

-Took 10 days off during spring break and went camping to reflect just what the hell I am doing in college. This is tough considering all your friends are hitting the clubs pretty much wed-sat night. But I made it especially during spring break to see if I can overcome simple things as "enjoying my spring break"

-Fasted for a week to appreciate the things in my life and to seep out the 3 years of fast food

-Cut off all my social circle for 3 months. That means no partying, no clubbing, no blunts and no liquors. No exception. If your friends are truly your friends, then they will understand.

-I read some great books regarding War commandeer/generals. Miyamato musashi and Patton comes to mind.

-Just a fight with your mental state. That is probably the biggest hurdle in people's lives. You can't win against a simple task of seeping new information?, then where the hell do you think your going in this world?.

It was very tough for me to initate this state of mind. I completely agree with you that no one likes to study, but I ended up loving to learn new things whether its directly related to my field or not.

The reward?

Excellent MCAT score-
Done with all my interviews
Enjoying my senior year
Pass the Blunts to the right and liquors all around

my advice is to lock up your computer and anything else that amuses you more than studying...until after your exam.

now, besides studying, you only have things that are even more boring to spend your time on......

i should take my own advice...but even if studying takes forever, there's no fasteer way to get a good grade unless you study...or you cheat (which i do not recommend you do).

however, besides reading, make sure you go to class, stay awake in class, and try to retain what you observe in class. if you can remember all of the information from class up till the exam, you don't even have to study that much.

finally, do your homework...even if it doesn't count for much. i didn't do my hw for one class because it was less than 10% of the grade, but as a result, i could never finish the exam questions in time.

basically, you just need to force yourself to study...or you can take courses that interest you more, so you won't have to force yourself to learn the material......

I love learning, just not what im studying. Most of the time im reading up on stuff I currently find interesting. Be it a circuit, how to build something... other miscelaneous knowlege. I just know I can read a book on something I care about for fun and learn a lot but so far haven't found anything USEFUL that I can apply my brain to. I mean I <3 computers look at the tech section (at least when I had a lot of posts there...) I love fixing them tweaking them and overall troubleshooting. However, I know that stuff is pretty much worthless in the real world. Sure, take your computer to CompUSSR or Geek Squad for $50 an hour to "fix" the computer but in the end they aren't paid much. If I recall correctly, CompUSSR was just slightly above minimum wage.

In THEORY, I should have very little issue when it comes to "the social circle" my friends only exist online now. I never have and probably never will do "the normal stuff" like partying, clubbing, "blunts" (No idea what that is) or drinking.
=\ probably have to just battle my mental state. Last time I talked to a friend (well at least someone I wanted to talk to) in real life... well more of an acquaintance because I rarely talk to them even online... was two and a half quarters ago, right after talking to her for about 20 minutes, I went to fail a midterm.

I have tried locking my computer but if I were to do that, I would reach insanity rather quickly. You know how I said I don't talk to people in real life? Well I don't do social stuff and the internet is the only real path I have to talking to people. Without it im a bit lost and well I DO like talking to people, just don't manage to talk in real life.

I DO go to class. Never missed a class, never late, never leave early. I rarely sleep in class but night classes are just evil and although I don't sleep I do tend to zone out. (school doens't offer those classes at NORMAL times, not popular enough or some mini cooper)
I retain everything I observe in class. My notes are absoluetely worthless because they just repeat what I saw. I understand all the logic behind the stuff, especially in physics but none of the stuff they explain in class ever seems to have anything to do with the actual calculation of the stuff. I mean if they just GAVE me velocity, acceleration, and time or told me to calculate for it sure. If they gave me angles and told me to figure ____ out no problem. But I guess I interpret the problems differently because that mini cooper never makes sence when I try to calculate it.

Yeah, homework does help. Most never return it, others don't bother to collect it. I do about half of it when it doesn't count.

=\ I don't know what course would interest me. Anything in an academic context is screwed over and is hopeless. I like circuits. In my 4th firefox tab is a schematic to make my computer's power light fade in and out like one of those apple standby lights. In an academic context I would have to calculate the voltage drop, the amperage between the resistors... I just don't care. Its like playing tennis... do I honestly care how fast the ball is going? How long it will take to come back down if I hit it straight up at 11m/s, how high will it go, and what about wind resistance? fury.gif Thats the crap I can't figure out. I know it falls, I know it goes up, but I dont care how long it takes. If it falls, it falls. If the circuit has a high amperage, then it will get hot. If the voltage is too high, it will get hot. If I touch it, sparks will fly wires will melt. Thats all I care.

hm I donno what you're majoring but if it's science or math then i can offer no help for you cuz i UNDERSTAND how you could memorize all the equations and formulas but STILL get them wrong every single time...

i'm an international studies major so my courses mainly deal with theories or scenarios but not all that practical ....

i think first you really have to like what you're studying. if something interests you, you'll have the urge to learn about them. i enjoyed my international relations class so i really put in a lot of efforts for it, although i got the worst grade for it... on the other hand, i really don't give a s*it about geology or calculus... so i guess you really have to choose what classes you're taking wisely...of course there're core classes that are just unavoidable...then you'll just have to take them and be done with them

taking notes while reading really helped me A LOT. and by that i don't mean just highlight them. i'd type them out, highlight them, put the page number besides each principals that i jogged down...so when final hits i just reread them to the extend that i can mentally map the pages of notes out... oh and a nice tip for reviewing is to link the pieces together...for say you just pick a random subject you learned today, then you write down/recall everything you know about it and see how far you can go...i donno if that helps in science-related fields but it helped me a lot.

review throughly before finals is crucial too. i took 11 classes last semester and i literally had a lockdown for over a week prior the final week. (gee that doesn't sound too painful now...but it was killing me...) for me, i perfer to study by myself. i believe interaction is bad cuz the subject just drift away when a group of ppl are gathered -__-' on that week, i studied about 8/up hrs per day, i'd just stay at a library or somewhere alone, and read my day off (as i said, my studies is not all that practical. in a way i just need to memorize like a few textbooks worth of information) so find some way that will enhance your study. to be honest i skip class a lot, and when i do attend, i'd end up fallen asleep. but review is really important.

and of course, the instructors play a great role in grading too. no matter what you do, you jsut MAKE SURE they remember your face, even better, your name. believe me, this helps A LOT when you want to bump your grades up. ask questions. if you really have nothing to ask then just ask simple questions. believe it or not they can answer every questions in the most complicated ways.

i hope i helped out somehow.

Hey~ have you ever tried drawing a mind map? You can use different colours, symbols or abbreviations to draw out the theroies or equations in Physics. It may be useful to you. Try it out!

For maths, perhaps you can start off with some easy exercises to build up your confidence then proceed to the more challenging ones. Once you found that some equations or techniques have been forgotten, check it out RIGHT AWAY. This is the same for physics.

Afterall, consult the professors when you come across difficulties.

Hope the suggestions are useful to you~
