i'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but here it goes.

my life, or rather second life goal is to become a wedding planner/party planner/ event planner. whichever comes first.

however, i don't know which field that would be and what major(s) i should be thinking about.

starting out as a wedding planner is probably close to impossible, soi was thinking about starting as an event planner through internships and things...but what major/ what kind of university am i supposed to go to??

my friend told me to major in marketing, but i'm not sure that would really help.

i was watching the hills (lol) and heidi wanted to do the whole night life crap and the place she got her internship was basically all made up of event planning, or night life planning and she went to like a fashionish university, rather the artsy. do i just go to a normal university or do i go to more of an artsy one??

thanks! biggrin.gif

I would go do marketing/business major or any technical major that deals with a lot of understanding people and organizing or whatever. I bet psychology would work too.

BUT, on the SIDE find a lot of extracurriculars that have to do with event planning and stuff: i.e. volunteer work, internships, shadowing, jobs.

It's always good to choose a somewhat generic major (cause there is no "wedding planning" major) because they give you skills that can be applied anywhere.

^ i agree with iDoof.

possibly take some art classes as well. like basic art classes since they teach you the minimal needed to know about art. why? because some people still cannot match and it helps knowing shapes and such. i know basic stuff but it's always good to have a refresher later on it school.

Are you still in highschool?
If you are you can still ask your councilor.

sure, your formal education is going to help you with the technical aspects of your future career, but in fields like event planninng, your main concern should be how to NETWORK and get in with your local scene and vendors. specifically as a nightlife event planner, you'll need to be friends with local promotors, DJs, producers, media outlets, bar/club/lounge owners, etc.

i'm doing that as well.
the college i'm aiming for actually has "event planning/management" but i think it also goes under hospitality management or just business/marketing like idoof said.

i agree with the majority and how internships really help. get into good internships, form solid relationships with superiors and everyone else. you never know how many windows will open up for you just by networking.

yeah, it probably doesn't really matter what you major in. Just get some experience.

I think hospitality management is the way to go. It's best not to major in something that's too too specific because if you don't get a job as a wedding planner, there's really no alternative to go to. Majoring in something a bit more general than your intended job makes you more versatile in the working world. =D

hey...you actually have the same aspirations as me!
i'm going to transfer to unlv...they have a really good hotel management program.
so i'm going to be double majoring in hospitality management and meetings and event management.

plus, las vegas has lost of hotels where people get married...great place to get lost of work experience.

Depends on your college. Event management? Experience matters most in the end so get those internships and network, etc.

I think Public Relations will help you out a lot. I'm taking it as part of my mass media course and PR is all about building and maintaining goodwill with people. It has lots to do with event management and that sort of thing. That's how you build up your network too.

A girl in one of my classes wants to pursue a career as a planner. You should definitely major in Tourism and Hospitality Management. smile.gif
