**Please read Post #18 for new post (didn't want to create another thread)**

I figured it's time for an upgrade, and after a bit of searching (and several rather strong cups of coffee), have set my eyes upon the following;

CPU:AMD 64bit Athlon 3500+ 939 socket Venice Core
Graphic card:XFX 256MB Geforce 7900 Extreme Edition (520mhz/1600mhz)
MOBO:ASUS A8N-SLI SE Nforce4 SLi Motherboard,
Memory: 2GB(2x1GB) SAMSUNG PC3200 DDR400 Dual Channel Kit
HDD:Seagate 250GB SATA2 7200rpm HDD 8mb Cache

I would just like to know if this is a good option to go for. This already fills the budget im willing to spend at the moment, so do you think this will be sufficient for the latest applications and games?

Im looking at straying from my big heavy CRT monitor and going for a 19" LCD in future. Are there any features I should look out for or avoid, when purchasing an LCD? Are the widescreen monitors any better?

Any info will be appreciated smile.gif rolleyes.gif

I recommend a Intel Core2duo setup or at least wait upon its release for your purchase, AMD will slash prices.. (eta: july 23)

I agree... once the core 2 duo launches, you will see price cuts in Intel and AMD products. It's only a month away!

We all wear masks. Everyone, everyday... sometimes we wear them so much, we forget who we really are. And sometimes if we're lucky, someone comes along and shows us who we really want to be, who we should be.

Tumblrrr.

Sounds like a very good idea to wait it out now, however just wondering but are those price cuts likely to affect worldwide market prices? or just the major retailers?

Thx for the link Jeffy

Like everyone's saying, wait a month.

And try to go with a better processor if you can. X2 or low end Conroe. Nice VGA though.

Sigged for life.

when the new AM2 and conroes come out. there will be a big price drop.. so it will be wise to wait.

450W Power supply

Not good enough if you want to go SLI. You need at least 510W.

With that rig, spring for a 512MB Radeon X1900XT. Better performance than that 7900.

450W Power supply

I recommend getting either a OCZ Powerstream 520w or PC Power & Cooling Turbo Cool 510 Express smile.gif

never skimp on the power supply since it is the heart of the computer.

I felt this article was relevant, a 4GHZ PC for $720. Not bad if you ask me.

Seasonic for quality and durability. smile.gif or Fortron (FSP group) for budget AND quality.

Opteron 146 @ 2.75ghz $160 FX57?
Nah numbers match but not the same. Aren't guaranteed the speed esp if you get a dud cpu. Need lots of ocable hardware... I say too much effort. Might be fun though.

Yay! I have FSP group power supplies. Sparkle and a Fortron. Good stuff though my 350 currently collects dust.

dell has good deals on desktops with prices that can compete with diy setups, especially if youre looking to buy a monitor too. get a e510 (35% off) and throw in a vid card from newegg and youre set. it sucks having to configure everything yourself, especially if you have one dead part and you dont know wat it is. plus you get a genuine os. id rather havea dual core and a decent vid card than a single core and a sli setup. youll probably get more life out of your pc.

Hi again guys smile.gif
Im pretty much set on my next setup.

*AMD Athlon 64Bit 4600+ Dual Core 939socket 2.2GHz X2
*ASUS A8N-SLi SE Nforce4 motherboard USB2.0, SATA, *2 16x PCI Express*, Gigabit LAN 400MHz Front Side Bus, 1394
*2GB (2x1gb) DDR 400 dual channel
*250GB SATA2 16MB 7200rpm Hard Drive Disk
*XFX 256MB Geforce 7900GT (470/1370) Dual DVI, TVout
*450W ATX Case

Now for the 19" LCD monitor, i need advice on which to get out of the following:

AOC LM928
Brightness: 250 cd/m2
Contrast Ratio: 500:1
Response time: 8MS
Input: D-Sub and DVI
Max. Resolution: 1280 x 1024 @ 75Hz
Dimension: 406 x 415 x 264 (WxHxD)mm
Weight: 6.0kg

Samsung 930BF
Brightness: 270 cd/m2
Contrast Ratio: 700:1
Response time: 4MS
Input: D-Sub and DVI
Max. Resolution: 1280 x 1024
Dimension: 416.6 x 420.6 x 200 (WxHxD)mm
Weight: 7.2kg

Viewsonic VX922
Brightness: 270 cd/m2
Contrast Ratio: 650:1
Response time: 2MS
Input: D-Sub and DVI
Max. Resolution: 1280 x 1024
Dimension: 431 x 468 x 201 (WxHxD)mm
Weight: 6.7kg

Dell E196FP
Brightness: 300 cd/m2
Contrast Ratio: 500:1
Response time: 8MS
Input: D-Sub and DVI
Max. Resolution: 1280 x 1024 @ 60Hz
Dimension: 401.3 x 412.7 x 144.4 (WxHxD)mm
Weight: 4.1kg

Out of curiousity, is it best to go for response time or contrast ratio? Primarily it will be used for gaming/multimedia.

Thanks everyone =]

Its a good proj/budget...

I have this one cause i was bored so made a 2nd computer. Liquid pump not working so im using stock cooling

from 2.66 i bumped it to 3.44 on Stock and its 40-44 idle.

I have mediocre RAM form patriot.
Honestly its a fun machine to OC, but not a stable one imo.

Get a 20.1 or largger, not a pitty 19" or smaller.

go for the viewsonic
since the contrast ratio will give you better color representation which youre looking for in gaming and multimedia
and the response time prevents ghosting in movies and games and will give you a better reaction in games
