hey i haven't been keeping up with the manga/anime scene since Death Note and Nodame. What manga is in right now?
Could anyone reccommend a good historical, samurai shonen manga like Kenshin and Peacemaker? Or a psych thriller like Liar Games and Death Note? Or something music related like Piano No Mori & Mozart doesn't write lullabies?

thnx in advance

Psych Thriller
Doubt
Mirrai Nikki

for the "in" manga..i guess, for me it's Kurosh*tsuji and The World God Only Knows xD

... i'm clueless about samurai shounen mangas. although i think Samurai Deeper Kyo is somewhat similar to Rurouni Kenshin in terms of time period. i should read on that genre no?

Can anybody recommend me a manga/anime that has a lot of action, kinda fastpaced and kinda dark? Like with a more serious storyline?

Ghost in a Shell
Tears to Tiara
Full Metal Alchemist (very popular)
Elfen Lied
Wolf's Rain

...sorry i can't write my own summaries on them *too many*...but you can just google them...or wiki them xD or...search up on ANN or manga updates.

Dunno about what's in right now, but I hear a lot of people recommending Skip Beat. It's about a girl who gets into the entertainment industry so she can get revenge on her first love. I personally don't like it though. tongue.gif

For Historical/Samurai Shounen
If you like comedy...Gintama (gag manga). It's set in historical Japan that's been taken over by aliens but it's like modern Japan because the aliens brought technology. It follows the everyday life of a former samurai turned freelancer Gintoki who runs an odd-jobs business with his two quirky subordinates from finding their client's missing cat to getting mixed up in a war between the aliens and the Anti-Foreigner factions all while trying to pay their rent. It makes fun of a lot of stuff such as other manga, anime, and the Japanese lifestyle. This one's more funny if you watch it since the voice acting is so hilarious. laugh.gif

Like mei mei mentioned, Samurai Deeper Kyo. This one's more of a fantasy. It follows the story of Demon Eyes Kyo as he seeks to regain his body after his soul was sealed inside the body of his rival, Mibu Kyoshiro.

For realism, Blade of the Immortal (my favorite samurai manga). This one's a seinen though, but it's realllyyy good. It follows a girl named Rin who hires a former samurai as her bodyguard who's been cursed with immortality. They go on a journey to seek revenge on the man who killed killed Rin's parents two years ago.

Pyschological thriller
If you liked Death Note then you should definitely try the Code Geass anime. They're really similar. This one is more of an action thriller and it has some very nice twists. It's about Lelouch who is a Britannian prince that gave up his right to the throne after his mother was murdered, and has vowed to destroy his father, the Emperor, and Britannia. He gains an ability through the mysterious power of the Geass, becoming the leader of the resistance movement to fulfill his two wishes: to seek revenge for his mother and to construct a world in which his beloved sister Nunnally can live happily.

The one I could think off the top of my head is Chrno Crusade. Chrno Crusade follows the story of Rosette Christopher, and her demon partner Chrno. As members of the Magdalene Order, they travel around the country eliminating demonic threats to society, while Rosette searches for her lost brother Joshua.

For anime
I second Full Metal Alchemist. The story follows two brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric, who want to restore their bodies after a disastrous failed attempt to bring their mother back to life through alchemy.
There's Mononoke which is a supernatural horror mystery. It's dark and has a serious storyline, but it doesn't have a lot of action. It's about an unnamed medicine seller who posseses a sword that can kill spirits.
shop

gintama, darker than black, peacemaker kurogane, baccano, samurai 7, fma 2

Anyone have suggestions on anime that makes you think? Something like Monster, Serial Experiments Lain, Ergo Proxy, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, etc. Ones that'll give me a good mind screw? Something that'll keep me hooked. =D

Thanks for the suggestion but I'm already watching that. ^^

I actually got around to buying Texhnolyze and I'm currently watching that as well so it's all good.

Not sure if you've seen these but try...

Cardcaptor Sakura: It's very magical schoolgirl type of anime, but once you hit the third season, the msgs it sends and the romance REALLY makes it all worthwhile =) the ending is actually an ENDING too and not some awkward cliffhanger =S one of my favourites ^^
Peach Girl: Lots of drama, really addicting and lots of uber cute romance wub.gif sigh*
Fruits Basket: One of the anime that people say is SO similar to Ouran and yet SO different. It's not AS funny, but a lot of romance too and I loved the manga ^O^
Clannad/Clannad ~After Story~: one of THE best romance stories I've ever seen. The first season has lots of cute romance, very high-school like and quite funny =P The second season is SO tragic and sad... but yet you see watch cuz you want to know what happens =( It's a REALLY good epic love story.
Zero no Tsukaima: If you're looking for something lighter and funny, this is definitely the right series =) 3 seasons long, LOTS of romance, really cute, really funny and just a good to story to sit back and enjoy ^^

Hope this helps! Let me know if you want more? lol

HIGHLY recommended anime: Darker Than Black

Genre: Magic, Action, hinted romance

Summary: Once upon a time, a giant wall that disrupts Tokyo, Japan alters the sky and landscape--given the name as Hell's Gate. The stars in the sky are taken away and replaced with fake ones. And around the same time that this gate came to existence, many people with various abilities begin to rise.

These humans that gain these abilities are used as assassins and spies around the world, also known as Contractors, and are hidden from the public's understanding. But in order to obtain a superhuman ability, they must sacrifice their humanity at the price of an odd contract. Whenever they need to use their ability, they must perform a strange act in order to satisfy the contract. (i.e: eating a flower, breaking the bones in your finger, folding down the corners of a book, aligning pebbles in a perfect line, drinking blood of children)

It is not clear what happens why they do not perform the act, but it is known that a price MUST be paid. It is very rare, but possible, that a Contractor can hold their power without having to give an act as a price of their ability.

The story follows the main protagonist who is a Contractor named Hei, also known as The Black Reaper. His ability is to conduct electricity through conductive material. He has an alter persona of a Chinese exchange student named Li, a clueless, caring young man. He is later to believed to have another ability and does not have to pay a toll whenever he uses his powers. Although he is a contractor and supposedly lost all humanity and emotions, it is hinted that there's more than meets the eye.

Why I like it? It's so good. Since I haven't been able to find an anime that meets the loveliness of Avatar and Full Metal Alchemist (and everyone here seemed to ignore MY request for such an anime yet answers the same request that repeats on every other page... not being bitter here.), I decided to watch this, which so far satisfies my needs. It observes what a sick and sad life that these contractors have to go through. Hei is really really kind when he is in his "I am Li, the Chinese student" mode, but when it comes to his Contractor instinct, he's an amazing fighter. The idea behind the story is very original but the story is very very confusing in the beginning.
