Is anyone in colorguard in here? My school's tryouts are going on right now. my highschool (SDHS) has a great guard team. But problem crazy.gif Their guard is known for a lot of dancing and they're rehersals are going at an extremely fast pace. I can't keep up with what the instructor is saying, and I can't get a strong grip of my flag. It's my third day and I'm still horrible. Any tips (or miracle stories)? Share them here smile.gif

I'm not actually in colorguard, but I'm on the dance team and I'm familiar with the colorguard team. All you can do is keep on practicing... Ask the captains or any other old members for help. If you can't get help during the tryout times, get someone to help you outside of tryouts. Don't give up!

I'm in my school's color guard! w00t.gif I'm going onto my fourth year, haha. It's funny because I didn't think I'd get this far when I joined. Drop-spins took me days to figure out and I had to fake my tosses for weeks before I could get them right. Spinning and tossing have become natural for me these past few years though... and while I'm not much of a dancer, I've grown to enjoy it. (: My school's color guard is pretty intense and competitive but it's fun getting to be a part of it.

I'm kind of confused though. it's just your third day of practice and you're already going through tryouts? o__o I had my flag for at least a month before I had to try out for the first time. mellow.gif Like rycekrispies1212 said, keep practicing (don't get overwhelmed!) and ask your captain(s) or any older members for help. If they're anything like the members of my school's color guard, they'll be eager to help. :] If you need want any extra advice or have any questions, you can always feel free to PM me--my guard is probably not exactly the same as yours, and I might not be able to answer all your questions but I'm here if you need me! tongue.gif

i am in colorguard. sophomore year...ummm cwhs cg. cg practices a LOT. thats all i can really say. this is my 4th year doing it but my first 2 years in junior high was sucky. it was hard to memorize the dances and the counts and the beats you had to count mentally. it was really really hard. but i think those years taught me how to keep up with the coach. the only problem i have now, is to practice. psh to get better than other people haha. sooner, you'll become used to it, and if you've noticed it enhances your memory on stuff. cool.gif its pretty cool. hahah

hope you have fun with it. my practices are like only tuesdays but once field season gets around its like tues thurs [maybe] and saturday, and when you have like competitions...more practice, and like stuff. i don't even know WHY i keep doing it, but ya its fun to meet with bandos and etc. heh its fun =]

don't stress out TOO much. haha tongue.gif

no, but i'm in marching band. you get used to it. a lot of my cg friends weren't so great at the beginning, but they improve a lot by the end of the season. just keep trying, and ask upper classmen for help!

i was in color guard in high school and like you, i couldn't get used to the dancing because i was too embarrassed..our performance was very theatrical. but i was forced to get used to it and not give a crap about what anyone else thought of me..i was put in the rifles team too and i didn't want to embarrass myself so i practiced in my backyard for days and days straight tossing and catching it..once you get used to it, it becomes a lot more fun..performing and all..i gained extreme school spirit through it smile.gif

so practice! and good luck..i strongly recommend color guard to people who don't have enough confidence in themselves to perform any other sport...i was surprised when i realized how much i got into it..

i'm in arcadia high school colorguard! this is my 4th yr being on it and i'm currently a squad leader.

our colorguard has a huge amount of people (rounding up to 80 people a yr) we're also known to be on top in southern cali for field season (placed 1st @ scsboa with the highest score) and for winterguard season, our team is split into 3 guards (intermediate A, scholastic A & scholastic world) our world guard last yr received third in the NATION @ wgi which is CRAZYYYY. it's the highest we've ever gotten and yeah... our A guard got 1st @ wgasc. loll yeah i guess i'm bragging but colorguard is the program that shaped who i am today and it's been a big part of my life.

for the tryouts, SMILE and just look confident. even if you screw up... you'll still look good, you know? thats what my advisor always told us before tryouts.
also, meet up with some frnds or returning members to help you extra after workshops or whtevr. get as much as help you can get.

hmm. my suggestions to you... (when you make the team)
MANAGE YOUR TIME WISELY. we rounded up in freshmen yr and we found out that we spent more than 350 hrs a yr on rehearsals. you HAVE to know that it's time consuming and especially during competitions.. you're gonna be giving up your weekends, basically. always finish your hw and don't put them away because you're "too tired." trust me.... i did that freshmen yr and i screwed up big time. -__- also, make new friends (whether they're older or younger than you) i met the nicest people and upperclassmen who basically helped me through high school with school works.... guy probs.... family probs.. everythingg. practice at home a lot if you can (i had disadvantages b/c i live in a condo and there's no space cept concrete floor)

^ off topic but, AWW I MISS AHS!!! =( Best cg team!!!

Anyways,
yeah, takes a lot of practice and confidence.

Hmmm, most colorguard etc i've seen are military fanatics but have no idea what they're talking about, and I would be afraid of even serving in the same division with.

I was in color guard for couple of months until I quit.
It's not my thing. But I did get better w/ the flag. Just keep on practicing. And ask the people that were in CG before for help.
