Securing 11 points from five qualifiers, Korea (3-0-2) joined Iran and nine other countries in the Asian Cup finals, regardless of the result of its final match with Iran on Nov. 15. Iran (3-0-2), who beat Taiwan 2-0 on the same day, shares the lead with Korea in Group B while Syria (1-2-2) earned only five points with one game remaining.
This is the fourth consecutive time Korea, two-time champion, advanced to Asian Cup finals since 1996 when it came in eighth. Korea also finished eighth in the previous event in 2004 after coming in third in 2000.
Reigning champion Japan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Australia and Qatar booked a berth in the event to be held next July along with the four co-hosts – Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.
Korea found the first chance when Choi Sung-kuk of Ulsan Tigers delivered a perfect cross from the left. Cho surged to convert it to a header past Syria's goalkeeper Mowssab Blahowss.
Syria made the equalizer in the 18th minute after Mahmoud Al Amena delivered a spectacular through pass from the midfield, paralyzing Korea's four back line. Goalkeeper Kim Young-kwang ran onto the front to parry it away with his chest, but Al Said got the ball deflected by teammate Zyad Chaabo and dribbled past Kim to find the back of the net between defenders.
Syria almost went ahead in the 20th minute when Chaabo got another through pass in front of the net. Goalie Kim made a flying save to keep out his powerful shot.
Korea struggled to take a lead again and Kim Do-heon went close in the 31st minute when Seol Ki-hyeon of Reading FC tipped a cross from Lee Young-pyo of Tottenham Hotspur back to the Seongnam Chunma forward. Kim sent a powerful one-bound shot, only to be denied by Blahowss.
After break, Seol sent a cross from the right in the 67th minute to Cho, who headed his cross just wide.
In the 73rd minute, Kim Nam-il sent a through pass and Choi, left unmarked in front of the goal, tried to flick the ball over the goalkeeper, which sailed over the bar.
A few minutes later, Blahowss made another save, parrying a strong short-range shot by Cho.
