I'm starting my first year at University of Toronto in September and I just got a questionaire to fill out about housing preferences and one of the questions asks if you prefer a co-ed or single-sex floor? (I'm a girl) Anyone with experience on which is better for meeting people, bathroom situation, etc...? Thanks =]

In my personal opinion, you're expecting to meet all sorts of different people whether you're living on a co-ed floor or a single-sex floor, so as far as which is better for meeting new people, you're going to be meeting new people regardless.

I'm a very clean person. I pick up for myself. I'm considerate of my roommates when I shave or trim my beard/hair. I try not take up all the hot water in the mornings (but I don't mind using it all at night since I'm the only person who showers late). However, I can tell you from experience that not all guys are this considerate. I shared a bathroom with 19 other guys my freshman year, and I saw phlegm on the bathroom sink, clogged toilets, unflushed urinals, empty shampoo bottles, etc. BUT, the girl's bathroom downstairs was hideous. I thought my communal bathroom was rather disgusting, but the girl's bathroom downstairs freaked me out. Not even naked girls in the showers could lure me into that place. When one of my friends slept over for the night, she refused to use the girl's bathroom and instead decided to use the guy's bathroom instead.

I mean that's not to say that guys are cleaner than girls, or even the other way around. I lived with different 5 guys in a suite last year, and they never bothered to clean. I'm living with two girls right now, and one occasionally leaves mess and the other is a clean freak.

My suggestion would be the co-ed dorms. In my opinion, they're more fun as there are more get-togethers and more parties. Also, it is less work to meet the opposite sex (not to say that you should let up on meeting guys outside the dorms). It'll be a different experience.

I think that there are pros and cons to living in both Co-Ed/Same Sex floors. But I really don't think meeting guys should be a major factor on where you decide to live. In truth, it all depends on whether you want to put yourself out there and meet people. You can live in co-ed corridor and not have any fun at all if you're not willing to go out there. The same goes for a Same Sex residency. It's not to say that Same-Sex floors aren't fun either. Like I said, it all depends on the people who live in your floor. During my freshmen year, I insisted on living in same-sex floors simply because I'm really particular about odors. So it's all up to you. I really think you'll have fun either way.

My freshman year I lived in a Co-Ed dorm and I would say it's better for meeting new people and it's not reallie a problem. If you are uncomfortable then that would be the only issue I guess, I don't know if it's just my university because we're pretty liberal but on my floor girls and guys would walk around in a towel when going to shower/coming out of the shower so if that might be an issue for you than I would suggest a single-sex dorm. But keep in mind you don't have to walk around in a towel haha...i had a huge robe.

I was on a co-ed floor and thought it was great. At my school, all-male floors were so unpopular that they don't have them anymore.

I've never lived on campus before so I can't really answer the question fully, but it is personal choice, it's more of what your comfortable with. If your comfortable living with both guys and girls go for it, but if your only comfortable with living with girls then that'd be the best option. Choose what you'd be comfortable with smile.gif

i lived on a single-sex floor and i LOOOOOVED IT! I personally thought it was going to suck but it was GREAT! OMG, didn't have to share bathrooms with guys (dirty) but with the girls only! :DDDD, of course guys can sleep over in your room if you wanted and also if your roommate is cool with that. It didn't suck, I made friends with a lot of girls, but I made more closer guy friends o___o;;; (because I'm a guy.....girl AHHA) It's great :]. Well, for me it was.

Seperate bathrooms?I guess... but I was on a floor where guys can't go into the girls bathroom at all, and on all the other floors of the dorm the bathrooms are co-ed.

I've been living on co-ed for two years now and Pros might be that I get to meet interesting (good or bad) people. Cons would be:
(1) some couple decided to take baths together and you know what...*ahem* It's nasty and hard to catch them doing it (to report them).
(2) I got to see guys almost naked...and they didn't have nice bodies...we are talking about 200lbs+...not that I am against any 'fat' people, but it was something I didn't need to see.
(3) Smells of guys....I lived on more of male-dominated floor and our floor smelled so bad!

I go to UMBC.. the dorms are basically all co-ed, every other room is you know girl boy girl boy etc... we each have individual bathrooms too.. whereas college park (MD) on one floor has HALF girls and HALF guys, where there is one girl bathroom and one guy bathroom at each side...

i personally LOVED dorming. I get a long with guys better though so i dunno lol. I made friends quickly with the people across my hall.. poker... video games... etc.. plus they were asian guys.. HAHA. which i guess was easier? tongue.gif but i really like the coed.. it's not like movies where it's all nasty cuz guys see girls and girls see guys..

haha. i mean you know?.... it's just like chill... not all like "eew close your door" etc smile.gif haha.
the guy right across my door is one of my best friends now..
