Hi soompi forums! I just joined recently but ive browsed these forums a lot..

Basically my problem, is that my grades since highschool hs been on a continual downhill..

in highschool i graduated wi th a 3.4 weighted, I got mostly As and B's and occasionally a C. my SAT score was in the high range (1460)

I came to UCD in the fall and for the first quarter i got a 3.1, not TOO bad, but that was j ust the tip of the iceberg. second quarter was a lot worse, my cumulative gpa sipped to about 2.8. my spring quarter was a terror, dragging my gpa to 2.5 (D in math T__T) my gpa, never in my life has went below a 3.

there's no major distraction in my life, i have fairly encouraging parents, i rarely party and drink, i never touched drugs except for an occasional cigarette, i guess my quetsion is, is it normal to do bad in you first year in college? is there something i'm not doing right? and is it normal to see this kind of grade decline?

Thanks all!
wheee..

Maybe your just adjusting to uni life, I mean HS to uni is somewhat a pretty big transition.
You mentioned everything, but not your studying routine.
Just stay focused, coz in the second year that's when the workload really comes along and the course will only get harder, so don't fall behind.

I think you should retake your class you got a D in cause the better grade will replace the D you got and if you don't know what your major in and you're taking your GE classes then it's prob cause you're taking classes that isn't your strength. This was the case with me this year :[ stupid math and chem haha good luckk!!

Have you noticed classes getting harder? Maybe try different study habits or try to put in longer hours?

I don't know what else to think of since I'm more a fatalist and believe that what happens is for the best.

For some people like me, college is wayyyy easier than HS.
For other people, college is a nightmare.

Perhaps you should change your studying habit, attend tutoring, talk to your professor during office hour w/e a problem occurs, and pay more attention in class.

My high school teacher warned us that our grades would slip down as much as 10% when we enter college/uni. Mine went considerably down as she said :x I have similar personal lifestyle as you and I found that in order for me to do well, I had to change my note-taking style, study habits and it really helped to approach the professors for extra help on clarifying notes as well as form strong study groups who can help you achieve the mark you want in class. Good luck with everything and hope you're able to improve your grades =)

I assumed college GPAs were gonna be a downhill slope.....build up that GPA as high as you can freshman year, then it'll take beatings until you graduate

some schools have this thing called "weeding-out" classes and those happen during freshman year. maybe your school does the same thing. it's to weed out the ppl who don't like their major enough to stick around or those who are not diligent enough to put in the extra efforts. but generally speaking, college level classes require more time because the materials are more complex. look back at your tests and see where you lost points... are they things you should have known if you had put more time studying? or are they simply questions for the few geniuses in the class?

Not everyone does well in their first year of college (I know I didn't x.x). College is different from high school. You might need to learn new ways of studying (note-taking methods or tutoring groups) or you might just need more time to adjust to the surroundings. But if you're majoring in something you're not interested in, that could be the problem.

It's not unusual for someone with a high gpa in high school to have a lower gpa in college. I'm sure as the semesters go on, your gpa will go up again.
