m-flo (meaning meteorite-flo) first burst onto the scene in 1999, making it into the Oricon top 10 with their debut single the tripod e.p. Verbal explains, " It was originally meteorite flow, but for the Japanese that's pretty long so they asked us to shorten it to m-flo and it stuck. There's no deep meaning to it. I guess we wanna have impact like a meteorite." Originally a three piece group consisting of Taku (Takahashi Taku) on turntables, Verbal (real name: Ryu Yong Gi) supplying the rapping and some of the vocals, and Lisa as the main vocalist. They released a number of albums together until 2002, when Lisa left to pursue a solo career. Taku and Verbal have continued to work as m-flo collaborating with a large number of artists, most recently resulting in a string of 'm-flo loves ...' collaborations with artists such as BoA, melody. and CHEMISTRY. Their R&B/Hip-Hop style has done surprisingly well with Verbal able to mix English and Japanese with impressive results. Taku and Verbal met while attending international school in Tokyo. Verbal is of Korean descent but was born in Tokyo, and has also collaborated with Korean artists such as S.E.S, Jinusean and WHEE SUNG. Also, m-flo is one of the few Japanese acts to have toured South Korea. Verbal also raps in English under the alias L Universe, which has released 2 twelve inch singles.
Their m-flo singles and albums are put out on the avex trax label. However, Taku and Verbal have also started their own record labels, Tachytelic Records and espionage records. respectively. Hinouchi Emi is signed under Tachytelic Records and under espionage records., we have the MIC BANDITZ and Heartsdales.
