Hm, I hope this is allowed!

Not all questions in SAT practice books offer detailed explanations, so I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread where we could ask these questions, and hopefully, receive some explanation by some extremely intelligent soompi members. tongue.gif If your question is a math question that involves a diagram, you could say what book you're using and the page number, and maybe someone might have that book who would be able to help you out. Same goes for critical reading passaged based questions. Otherwise, just post them here and we can help each other out!

I'll start off with these questions.

Writing:

Conflicts between land developers and conservationists have repeatedly arose, causing Congress to reconsider legislation that prohibits building within habitats of endangered species. No error.
- I thought the answer was no error, but it's actually A (arose). Would the correct way of writing it be "arisen"?

Quick to take advantage of Melanie Johnson's preoccupation in the history of the Johnson family, the genealogist proposed investigating that history--for a large fee. No error.
- I thought the answer was D (that) because I thought it should be "their". But the answer is C (preoccupation in). What is incorrect about that?

the 1st i think it's "arisen" instead of "arose."
"arose" is the past tense of "arise."
"arisen" is the perfect tense of "arise."
and because the sentence is in present perfect "have (verb)" you use "arisen" instead

the 2nd is an idiom error. it should be "preoccupation with" instead.
