The best advice I can give is find a good study group. The hardest thing in college is to study by yourself, no one single person can do it alone really. Unless you are a complete genius, but even then you will need help. Find a good study group.

They will keep you focused, they will help you and etc.

nah...i think it just varies with different ppl and how they study.
although it is nice to have a good study group...dont feel compelled and
hopeless if you cant find one..
sometimes they get you off track too wacko.gif

wow thanks for alot of great advises. I'll try to remember them all.
Im going to college the next spring so Im soo nervous. I dont know what I should do 1st. But whenever I think about paying bills, books, tuition then i started to get goosebumps. Should I take summer courses ?? I want to take a class or 2 in the summer but i dont know which classes that i should take. I want to take the public speech cuz i need to improve myself [i know that my face will turn red and then i'll start to loose myself or make a fool of myself] Ugh, im so screwed!

how do you guys who finished at least the first year of uni find your majors? i heard that the major switching rate is extremely high nowadays..and do you find that your professors are good or bad? for some reason, i get this feeling that uni professors don't help you at all, even if you desperately need it..do they just leave the classroom at the end of class and not let students get a chance to ask them questions or do they stick around like hs teachers?

i just finished my first year. i go to a state university i don't know how the professors at your college are going to be like but my professors this year were great. i personally like college professors more than hs teachers they help you a lot more. it's very easy to ask them questions especially with email some professors rush out after class because there is another class with another professor coming in to teach but all my professors encourage us to email them or meet them during their office hours. i email my professors like crazy and most of them email me back the next morning. i had professors this year who were worried because no one was going in to see them and i had some professors who ask for questions after they explained something.

My advise is don’t lose those good study habit you’ve developed I have a friend who went from honor student in hs to academic probation in college and another who was valedictorian and failing tests in college. Also try to learn how to manage your time well I found it very hard to do this. Good luck to all you incoming freshman the year goes by really fast.

No matter what... you need to socialize in class... especially for the hard classes. Im noticing a strong correlation between my social behavior in class and my overall grade and spirit about class.

I heard that the only thing that makes universities harder than hs is the difference in how professors teach. That the material uni students cover aren't actually difficult. Is that true or is everything difficult?

I was wondering, is it better to have classes intersperced throughout the day or have them crammed together with more free time?

How do you deal with homesickness? There's a college in the town I live in so I'm thinking about transferring next year if the big city college doesn't work out. I think I'm going to miss the small town and best friend too much lol...

Can anyone tell me about SUNY stony brook?
not sure if it's the right school for me.. and all that, but it's too late for that at this momment, so make the best of it?

what do you do during orientation other than getting your scheduels?
and how often do you end up carrying your laptops around, even though it's not to classes?

do you get to pick and choose your teachers in the beginning, meaning as a freshman?
hi there

:D

Is this the thread where people had a list of what to bring to dorms?

I remember there was a thread, but I don't remember if it was this one or a different one. unsure.gif

Do universities look primarily at marks for undergrads or do they factor in community services and such majorly as well?

i agree it depends on how you study i can't study in groups i get distracted when i'm in a group i want to do anything but study i always study by myself and so far it's been working very well for me i've made the dean's list both semesters that i've been in college so it depends how you study some people study better in groups and some people like me study better alone

I say YES... it matters, but hey, people do it =)
You won't be the only one?..(if they didn't get accepted to fall but acepted to spring - like me^^, but i didnt want to go to school in the spring so i chose to go to another school where i got accepted in the fall..and i'll be graduating from that school)

I think for soph, juniors, seniors who take a fall semester off - for THEM it won't be weird going to school in the Spring because they already know people. They know everything and they've already made their friends from years before and know where everything is...

For freshmen you make your friends within the first semester.

I just think if you go in the Spring instead then you'll feel a tad.. lost cuz all other freshmen will already have made their friends? especially if it's dorming... but yeah, i mean you could still make friends from classmates and such. But then you'd really have to TRY and make friends. I honestly think it'll be hard.. also depends if you dorm or not.

Like let's say you ARE dorming on campus and you go into a dorm where EVERYONE else (freshmen) know eachother... you WILL be left out. I know a couple people that did that and you hardly ever see those people hanging out with the rest of the floor.... When I dormed freshmen year the majority of friends or aquaintances WERE floor people.

But if you have to do Spring that don't freak out... you just have to kinda "catch up" in the social scene...^^ Especially cuz you won't know anything as a freshmen - while the rest of your class learned from fall semester =]

I never lived in dorms but rather, an apartment across campus. My friends lived in dorms and suites so I was always on campus. Here's a list of some things I'd recommend to bring: (mainly for girls)

clothes, of course, but not TOO much! (little space)
Laundry detergent
basket
mini-fridge
microwave (or ur school may even let you rent a fridge w/ microwave xD)
laptop
chair
bed stuff
bucket for shower items
small container for toothbrushes & etc
FLIP FLOPS!
towels, lots
and cleaners/disinfectants
tissue paper
full length mirror (if there's not already one)
lamp
hair dryer

and any accessories, toys, books, etc etc. o.o;
