At uni there's the "dean's list" which is similar. If you get a 4.0 you get dean's list. 3.5+ gets you on the honor roll, and 3.5 gets you honorable mention. At least that's how it is at my university.
I believe there comes a time when everything just falls in line.

I just finished my first semester of Year Two and I was quite disappointed that I just found out about Microsoft Office OneNote 2007. If you have a new laptop, most likely it's already installed on your computer.
To me it was really helpful because it has tabs so you can organize your lecture notes (if you take notes using your laptop) and the best part is, you don't have to save anything. LOL And you can record audio + video which is good too but you'd have to sit close to the prof when they are talking. But also if you type while recording- it kinda gets in the way, but still useful regardless.

Another cool thing about this is that you can import your "lecture notes" directly into OneNote and use their pen tools to highlight or even draw on top of them. And you can move text around easily- it's really organized, I'd recommend using it. smile.gif Hope this helps.

Well, I just finished my semester of my first year, and I've got to say that I've learned what NOT to do. This is a rather obvious one, and one that I knew the entire time I was going against it, but for some reason, I REALLY lacked motivation this time around thinking that my life was going nowhere:

GO TO CLASS! Yep. It really stresses you out if you don't go and you don't study the materials. Somehow, I passed with all B's, but yeah. Definitely, go to class. Even if it's easy to skip it.

Edit:

Oh! Another point. Sometimes, some professors like to say random things in class that seem really irrelevant, but in actuality, it might just show up on the test. It's a way to reward those who were actually there to hear them say it. Yeah. I missed it 'cause I wasn't there. T_T

don't set the fire alarm off at 6am in the morning and your dorm buddies won't hate you.

don't skip class unless you have a good excuse
do what you need to do to get the work done
if you find your dorm room distracting, go to the library
join a club or intramural sport
always keep your drink with you
tylenol + water + french fries can be your best friend for hang overs
step outside your bubble

- Don't be afraid to talk to your academic advisors and tutors, they will help you a LOOOOTT omg i love my advisors they're sooo nice and welcoming <333
- Ah yes, leave your door open if you're dorming. That's how you make friends EASILY. (My best guy friend made a mistake of not leaving his door room open, so he rarely made any new friends -____-; he's kind of shy also.... )
- Cup of noodles are good for emergencies (if your dining hall served bad food, or you have an essay due last minute and you can't run to the dining hall to eat, etc)
- Don't eat too much cup of noodles though, if you live off of them you're bound to get sick.
- DO NOT DO DO DO NOTTTT DO NOT ENROLL INTO 8 AM CLASSES. (seems freakin' impossible to wake up for the class for some reason, even when you had a 7:15am class everyday in HS.)
- Don't forget your flip-flops for the shower! Hahaha.
- MAKE SURE YOU BRING ENOUGH TOWELS, I remember I brought my laundry and all of my towels home to wash that weekend and I forgot to bring them back.. so I had to dry myself with my clean pair of sweatpants LOLOL
- The dining hall may be all you can eat, but make sure you control your portions, and don't forget to eat your fruits and veggies! (BEWARE OF FRESHMAN 15!!! My weight was fluctuating all year long haha not bad though, no Fresh15 for me :])

.. uhh i'll get back to you on this. there's a lot more but i can't think right now.

john tesh the college advisers, they are so dumb.

I want to cry!
I'm doing so badly.
I'm wondering if it's okay to just scrap my entire year, and apply to a college with my highschool marks.
Of course not, they'll take all my fail marks from University and I won't be able to make it into ANYTHING right? ;___;

If someone can give me advice, please pm me.. ;__;

1. Go to lectures and keep up with readings.

As easy as this may sound, it's so easy to just sleep in. I'm now cramming for my midterm later today as a result crazy.gif

2. Eat well

3. Sleep well

4. Exercise

5. Get involved

- jello shots take time to digest...don't eat a million more because you don't feel anything 5 minutes after the first few.
- 8am classes are no good.
- thai food everyday for a week is no good.
- football is life, life is football
- water + centrum + greasy food = no more hangover
- get involved and go out of your comfort zone

After two weeks of uni, the best advice I could possibly give is SLEEP! Seriously, I have been dying in my 9am lectures ho ho ho... Oh, and it's also wise to start your homework and readings when you're feeling fresh - you don't really wanna be thinking "HOLY COW! GOTTA READ 5000 PAGES + WRITE REPORT + WATCH AN EPISODE OF WHATEVER" at 9PM LOL (excluding some of you vampires wink.gif). Although I've tried to cram readings on several occasions, it wasn't really effective for me; I couldn't concentrate and the majority of things I read didn't sink in.

Another word of advice: STOP READING THIS THREAD and get back to work you slackers! laugh.gif

I think the best advice anyone's ever given me as a Freshmen (I'm a Junior now) is, think about it before you actually do it, what you do now, actually can have consequences years in the future.

It's only an hour? Have you thought about just driving? There are plenty of students who drive a ways if they really want to go to the college.

However, living a dorm should be easy for you ... you can just drive back home every weekend if you can't imagine staying away just yet. ^^

I have actually thought about using this program. Its been sitting around on my computer literally dormant for at least 2 years i'll give it a try and see if it helps smile.gif. Thanks for this tip!

Oh and my college tips for first years

1) Bring a map (regardless of how big your uni is...i know my one is so big it needed its own postcode laugh.gif ) you dont want to miss out on attending your first tutorials (first impressions last tsk tsk (kidding) its more about getting there early and meeting some new people (face it you're gonna be with them for the next half year (or at least) so try to make a friend or two on the first day).

2) Enjoy uni while it lasts. It may be painful to say but depending on your course you will be at uni for an average of 4 years (longer if you do medicene or combined degrees but average is 4 years id say) afterwards you're out there in the workforce working full time (or part time..or casual...) so in many cases seriously enjoy your time at uni while you're here. Don't forget to excel in your courses. It gives you kudos with your potential employer biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Keep an open mind. Usually, university level professors don't spew garbage out of their mouths 24/7 like most high school teachers did.

What I find it balance is key-all work and no play= BAD but all play and no work=screwing up

Exercise often for relaxation
Keep up and be organised (I should take my own advice =_=)

Try not to get distracted (Still working on this...)
