aww dang. yeah i used to be pretty dang quiet but college def opened me up. i'm no social butterfly but at least i can small talk now.
thing about the dorms is that you don't have to stay in your room all the time; and if she's a party girl, you might not even see her that much because she's going out. and you also make your own friends and go to their place instead of staying in your room.
but if you do have problems like she comes stumbling in hella loud at night, talk to your resident assistant @_@ just stick it out for like a week or so to feel her out...

I participated in the KLI program at Yonsei this summer in Korea and prior to that, there was an optional field trip/orientation. It was thanks to that field trip that I made my closest friends in Korea and was able to have one of the greatest experiences in my life. So I'm just a bit scared that since I experienced what I did in Korea, that the same might happen at my college. And since I won't be able to go, I'm regretting it right now.
Although I know that each college's frosh or orientation is different, I'd just like to ask based on personal experience of others how much this is worth it? Did people end up meeting their closest friends through orientation? Did it make your overall first year a much better experience? Or did everybody just end up forgetting each other within 2-4 weeks and managed to settle into your own group?
There is going to be another orientation for the whole freshman undergrad class. But this one is specifically for my commerce program.

Let's put it into perspective.
I am quiet, shy, I have my morals and I don't party. I'm not a social butterfly. I consider myself generally friendly and I'm non confrontational in person so I'm easy to get along with. I just kinda keep to myself.
My assigned room mate friended me on Facebook and told me she likes to party. From her pictures she looked stereotypical college party girl, with blonde hair and orange tanned skin. I didn't want to judge by pictures because I don't know the girl, and just because she parties doesn't mean she's a bad person. But I got nosy and read her past wall posts, and apparently she was arrested for something, and had to spend three nights in jail and do community service. And before that (separate instance entirely) she apparently lost her license.
I don't know what to do. I have a feeling we're going to clash on so many levels. I'm nervous enough about college, extremely anxious about leaving home, and this isn't the type of news I wanted to hear. This is on top of learning that my dorm is one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) party dorm on campus at one of the biggest party schools in the country.
Anyone have any advice?
I'm also posting this in the room mate thread, sorry for the double post...
i'm like that. i'm very introverted. i share a dorm with 3 other girls (but we all get our own rooms, thank goodness) and actually, they're right outside in the living area drinking. they're really sweet and stuff, but i don't really mesh well with them.
yeah, i'm a firstie!
i'm stressing about TEXTBOOKS! i already have an assignment due tuesday but its out of the textbook, which i ordered online, which means it will probably not be here by that time.

Okay, what if i became sick and i couldn't attend class for the day..what should i do??????
Cause I know that in Highschool if i become sick, the next day i sent in a note to the attendance office and i'll get an excuse for it. But what about college? What am i suppose to do to let them know?
Besides that..anybody have workstudy??
I'm pretty sure they do have mailboxes. If you live in the dorms then you should go check in ur housing department. Or ask the advisors...kekeke

If you don't attend the first day, the professors are more than likely to drop you from the class. The professors have to consider the wait-listed people and the ones that want to add the class. You can try to contact the professors through their email to let them know ..but they probably would just tell you it's unfortunate and they can't do much about it.
But if it's not the first day and some time have already established, then you can just notify the teacher through an email. Professors are really iffy about students missing class so check the standards they set out for missing class.

For my school, if it is a big lecture class where there are a lot of students like general chemistry, most of them will not take attendance and if they do take attendance it will be via clickers which they will not expect the students to have the first day. If it is a small class then the prof will probably give you a email to warn you.
Also, to be excused in my school, you have to get a note from the dean for the corresponding department. So get a note from the doctor and talk to the dean if that is who your school works.

You contact your teacher saying you were sick by calling, e-mailing or going in person. Sometimes they will give you a pass, OR they will say "SOL" depending on their policy.

generally in college the professor could care less if you miss class. if it's a small class and they'll def notice, just shoot them an email or go to class and explain your situation.
if it's a big class, it shouldn't matter... difference in college and HS is that you can cut class and you won't get in trouble for it (though your grades might).. if you think you're gonna miss a quiz or a test, just let them know

I have a work study. I actually just had a job interview today for the library which is conveniently located in the dorm I'm staying in. I'd be amazing to have a job right there in my dorm. But yeah, work study kids have an advantage over other kids.
Today is my second day after moving in (stayed one night so far)... I'm feeling so homesick already... I miss my family and boyfriend and best friend so much... Anyone else wanna share how they deal with this? I don't want it to affect my first classes on Monday and the rest of the week... but at this rate it will... v__v

I dont think you have to declare until at least second year - so dont worry so much about it yet. Just take various courses - like bio, history, business etc... until you find something you like. Or perhaps see an academic advisor at your school and see if they can help you out.

-Definitely- don't take random classes!
GE should be required at the UCs as well, so just try to fill that out. It's supposed to take about 2 years anyways, so by that time you should have an idea of what majors you want to stay away from and what you're interested in.

Ok so when I applied I selected International Relations / Asian Studies as my first major option, I know that I want to go into some kind of diplomacy/bussiness related career field and I plan to take Mandarin. I'm wondering.. should I switch to International Bussiness? Is this possible? Can I double-degree? I'm so nervous >___<

GE are 2 years worth of requirements needed in order to transfer into a CSU / UC and are needed to graduate. They are mandatory however there are a lot of different choices.
SOL = shiz outta luck

I did the same, majoring in International Relations and minor in Asian Language/Studies. But if you want to go into some kind of diplomacy/business, then yes you should go into International Business. International Relations is more of.. Liberal Arts?
And do you mean double major (double-degree) o.o good luck with that.

I switched to Nursing, even though it's impacted.. International Relations just wasn't my thing.
