Over and out from the skipper
A tearful David Beckham has quit as England captain following their World Cup exit after five-and-a-half years at the helm.

The Real Madrid star announced his decision barely 12 hours after England had been dumped out of the competition on penalties by Portugal.

Beckham revealed it was "the most difficult decision of my career" and added he had taken it some time ago after consulting with his family.

Beckham was given the armband initially by caretaker boss Peter Taylor for the friendly international with Italy in Turin in November 2000.

Manager Sven-Goran Eriksson decided to keep Beckham in charge when he took over as coach in January 2001 and he has led his country 58 times.

Beckham read a prepared statement before leaving the stage with tears in his eyes without making any further comment.

He said: "It was the greatest honour of my career when Peter Taylor made me England captain and I fulfilled the England dream. Now I feel is the right time to pass on the armband as we enter a new era.

"I stress that I want to continue to play for England and help the new manager Steve McClaren and the new captain.

"This is the most difficult decision of my career and I came to it some time ago, but I hoped to leave on the back of a successful World Cup. Sadly it was not to be.

"After discussing it with my family, I feel the time is right. I would like to thank all the players and manager for my support as captain, the media and England supporters. For me to do this job has been an absolute honour. I am so proud I lived the dream."

I just read the news from another site and i'm totally suprised by his decision. Beckham's a great captain and it pisses me off he quit to be an England captain but the good thing is he still plays for England. Hope he feels better! He looks so down in the pic you posted.

A lot of people were skeptical of his skills as captain before the World Cup, but I think that he truly proved himself to all the doubters. It was a great run, but I'm looking forward to seeing him play for Real Madrid. (WC is crap.)

sad.gif It made me sad when I read the article on FIFA.
I'm really sad that they keep saying the current era is ending.
And the whole, "last World Cup" thing for so many wonderful players.

well 2006 Germany was there best chance to win it. 2010 in South Africa, it will be a really hard task to win the WC by then. so this year was there best chance to win the WC. England should've won. makes me sad to hear this article and to see England out.

Beckham had some bad times, but he really proved himself and helped England a lot.

He was one of the greatest captains, but I believe its time he steps down.

If you think about it, he is helping the team also. A stronger younger player will hold the captain's arm band and will have more strength to help the team.
He is sacrificing, but in a good way.

I can't imagine anyone else being captain, as I will always picture David Beckham being the one.

thank god. beckham was a crap captain. not inspirational enough, didn't contribute enough.

Just as well he gave it up, rather than being dropped from the team and stripped for it. I think he knows he's past his time and his days were limited.

His place in the england first team is not even justifable on his current form. Give the armband to Terry or Gerrard, who are more naturally suited to be leaders.

terry was the favorite last time I heard of it.

btw, I just wanna know why you guys thinks Becks was such a great captain, just outta curiosity. He wasn't terrible, but he wasn't exceptional either to me.

i agree with M!ke. It was a smart choice to step down before he was forced to. He probably sees himself retiring in a couple of years. The press hasn't been exactly nice to him lately either.

I'd have to agree. He was an OKAY captain, but for a team of England's caliber? I don't think so. I think the best captain from our generation was Roy Keane. He was the man.

his time came. england need to start fresh with the 30+ talents gone. beckham will probably retire from england around 2008.
Life goes on too fast.
