My SQL Database not sure

I'm not sure if this is the right spot.
I was wondering what a database is.
Also, what a database does, and how it is related to My SQL
In codings, if they ask for database, what am I suppose to put in?
Such as,
SlimStat needs to be able to connect to your MySQL database.
You can use SlimStat with an existing database, or create a new database if you prefer.
var $database = "database"; // The database containing the stats table.
