Square Watermelons - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/1390088.stm
^^ "Each melon sells for 10,000 yen, equivalent to about USD$83. It is almost double, or even triple, that of a normal watermelon." So that means that typical watermelons are around USD$28-42 each. They're actually more like $100 (square watermelons).

IPB Image
USD$60 for that batch of strawberries. Not too outrageous... I was in Kyoto's Nishiki Market and picked up some strawberries for my coworkers... USD$25 for 2 strawberries.

IPB Image
Mmm...USD$1,300 for 2 melons.

I've purchased a square watermelon once to be shared with coworkers... it's kinda weird to eat with the rind so you eat it in cubes. Tastes the same... just better to store and people will know it's expensive.

Wow, it's so expensive. o_______o

I remember reading somewhere that in Japan, the price of two cantoloupes is equivalent to a brand new computer. Wow. ohmy.gif

Although the watermelon looks interesting, and the colours for the strawberries look pretty, heh.

i remember the reason why its soo expensive is when i watched this cooking show. they put in a lot of time and effort. they get awards and are acknowledged for their fruits. i know some of the techniques and methods are passed down from father to son. i think i remember this man would only make 100? cantaloupes a year. and he put in a lot of work. like at 3am he'd wake up and like check on them and he'd feed them only special ferterlizer that he made so that the fruit is like really plump and its juicy and sweet. where the green outer part of the cantaloupe is, you can barely even see it. their really patient with what they do. and with a limited amount of quantities, no wonder they sell it at that price. haha whatever fruit they make is like their child, they nurture it.

i'd try the strawberries though. xD

oh and for the shape, they put it in a wooden box when its being grown so it can take its shape as it matures.
